Used 170 Degree Thermostat Now Temp Gauge Stays Cold, No Power Under 2K RPM
 

ok my thremostat had recently been sticking closed and causeing my car to over heat so i went to the auto parts store an got a one but when i asked for one their asked which one they had a oem replacement an a 180, 170, 160 degree ones too so i went with the 170 to test it out an when i put it in my temp is almost al cold an i have no power under 2 grand BUT THE POWER BAND IS STRONGER THAN EVER so what did i do to get this extra power the only took 2 minutes to install lol an will it mess up my car :eek: :crying: :cool:

Mazda OEM T-stats ONLY. Napa SOMETIMES has them.... but thats the only parts store that MIGHT have them. Order them online at mazdatrix.com, atkinsrotary.com, racingbeat.com, etc... If cost is an issue, it shouldn't be. T-stats are cheap compared to rebuilds..

Unless you are 100% sure your t-stat is working properly, I would stop driving.

Since when did our cars have any power under 2k? Also.. if your power band changed... you probably did damage to your engine already....

What was the car doing before you changed the thermostat? (meaning why did you think you needed one)
What year/model?
What previous mods does the car have?

ok i know these cars make nothing on the bottom end but it has got a little worst thats all an my mods are light intake catback but ya my power band is more peppy now i think it is cus it is running cooler form when it was before of almost over heating every 5 seconds but ya this wont hurt it will it the temp stays a little above cold an nothing else has chagned

I talked to Advance and they say they have a couple OEM thermostats for my '87 TII, since they're marked OEM should they be alright to use?

The stock ECU is running an adjustment to the fuel (and possibly ignition) due to the cooler running engine.
In general, the engine will run richer - more fuel.

I bet your gas mileage will suffer.

If they say NSK on them, they are factory OEM.. Advance probably just means they are OEM replacements.... meaning they are designed to work like the OEM part. They are probably not mazda genuine...

Look for "NSK" stamped into the steel of the t-stat.

I asked them, they're from a different manufacturer. Mazda will charge me $30 for a thermostat. Oh well I guess.

30 bucks is cheaper than a rebuild. :)

Is the thermostat the only thing that people have consistently had horrible issues with if they used anything but OEM?

No, there's several things... Viton oil seals is another one.... Lots of people report issues with them.. some people have no probs, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Edit, there's more.. I just can't think of them.
