Update on Wiper Switch Fix

Sup everyone, just wanted to tell about how I got all of my wiper functions to work. If you read my previous post, you'll recall that i did the wiper switch fix according to the directions at http://www.zapta.com/tal/rx7/wiper/main.html
These directions show how to replace the relay nearest the wiper switch fix. After doing that, my wipers worked in the II speed, the mist function worked, and the wipers came on when pressing the washer fluid spray buttonn, however the wipers still didn't return to the home position, the intermittent still didn't work, and I still had no rear wipers. I wanted to replace the other two relays in the switch, but couldn't find the part number for the relay nearest the rear wiper switch. (The white relay with a part number which begins with G8S). So after many internet searches, viewings of cross-reference charts and relay technical information pdf files, I decided to take a chance and get the relay I thought was the one that would work, Omron's G5LE-14-DC12.

After replacing the G8S relay with the G5LE relay, the wipers return to the home position and the intermittent function works. Then I replaced the relay nearest the hazard switch, and the rear wipers function. (The relay nearest the hazard switch is the same as the relay nearest the main wipers switch, G6C-2114P-US-DC12). So now everything is working!

I'm no electronics expert, so if you decide to use the G5LE relay I used, and something bad happens, don't blame me! I wanted everything to work like normal and took a chance on this particular relay. Of course since i just finished this today, I have no long-term results to speak of. And if something does go wrong, I will inform!

P.S. Don't forget the desoldering braid and low-watt soldering iron when doing this fix!

Peace!

What relays control which functions?

RX-Revvin 09-23-01 05:01 PM

Here's the order in which I replaced the relays and what they fixed:

The relay nearest the main wiper switch- The II speed, Mist, and
the wipers turned on when pressing the spray/clean button

The relay nearest the rear wiper switch(the white G8S one)- The
wipers returned to the home position

The relay nearest the hazard switch- The rear wipers

My wipers won't turn off unless I pull the plug at the wiper motor. Does anyone know if these relays could cause my problem. I have not really put much effort into fixing this but your post has given me some motivation.

Yes thats what happened to two of my RXs when the relay went; the wipers just start and won't stop. Go to the website mentioned above and this fix should stop the problem.

wiper relay functions? RX-Revvin

My wipers currently work in low, high, mist and int, but in mist and int will not come to the 'home postion'. They also sometimes just stop in the middle of the window in mist and int...

Are you sure and can you confirm your previous post about the function of each realy?

I think that only the white (G8S) relay must be screwed on my
car.

I guess I can't really confirm the functions of each relay, that's just what i noted worked after I replaced each relay. It could be that the order in which I replaced the relays had something to do with the functions because it might be that some functions require more than one relay, so my advice would be to replace all three just to make sure you cover everything. Good luck!

Poor design and quality?

Thanks for the reply,

I just checked with the auto wrecker and the dealer, both wanted two arms and the dealer wanted a leg as well (I guess that they wanted to make a years profit in one sale!), so I removed the switch assembly and I am just confirming for my piece of mind the OMROM part numbers so I can get the local electronics store to order the relays in (another week of waiting).

Since the removal of the switch assembly is more trouble than the replacement of the 3 relays, I will be ordering and replacing all 3, even know the rear wiper works just fine. The plastic used on the dash assemblies of this car are the poorest quality and now afer 10 years are so brittle that multiple removal replacement is just asking for trouble!

It is too bad that the electronics and electrical systems of the car are so problematic, kind of diminishes the appeal!

Do the 3rd generation cars suffer so?
