universle keys?
the other day i was just fucking around in my friends 7 and i wanted to see if my key would work. to my surprise it did! i told him and all my other rx7 friends and it turns out we can all use our keys on everyone else car :confused: has anyone else tried this or is this some kind of freak accident?

All of our locks seem to wear ALOT over time... No they are not universal key's...

The tumblers are worn/gummed up. My parts car and running car keys were identical though. Therefore, I saved doorhandles and locks. Clean and lubricate the locks. It should help.

yea, ive owened 9 mazda minitrucks and still own 2, last week i tried all 20 keys i have(outa couriosity) and every one fit, opened and started.

Please search next time, this topic has been covered quite a few times. You would have found this: The reason that many older cars can be opened with the wrong key is because the lock tumbler get all gunked and jammed up, with the pins locked into place. If you cleaned out the lock cyl and lubed it with a proper dry lubricant (not wet lubricants like WD-40, that would actually make the problem worse) only the correct key would open the lock. So the moral of the story is: search before posting and clean your lock cylinders if any key opens your car, as you have not maintained the lock cylinders. |

Yea my friend lubed his locks up to find out his key stopped working *laff*.... Good thing a friend of mine had a key that worked for his car. HA.

i find actually that if you don't clean them you need only carry 1 mazda key. The weight saved by having only one key per ring generally subtracts .2-.3 seconds from your 1/4 time.

Mazdas come with one key that works everything. The ignition, doors, trunk/hatch, glove box, etc all on one key. If you need different keys for different things then someone replaced that lock and didn't bother to to it right and have the lock re-key'd |
I believe his point was, "If you have a lot of RX-7s, and they're all able to be opened by one key, you don't need a keyring full of RX-7 keys."
