Underheating problems

Hey all,
I've got a problem with my S4... the engine is UNDERheating. Yes, that's right, it's not getting up to temperature (sorta wierd for a rotary!). Anyhow, any ideas on how I could fix this would be greatly appreciated. Info on the car is as follows:
S4 GXL
S4 / S5 hybrid engine: S5 13BT ext ported, with S4 N/A manifolding, S4 water pump, S4 omp etc.

I have already replaced the thermostat (with a proper Mazda one) so that mustn't be the problem.

I'm out've ideas... so any help would be great.

Do you have an electric fan? Also, is your clutch fan locked up?

How does one diagnose underheating?
Are you trusting your gauge or do you have an aftermarket one?

NEVER TRUST THE STOCK GUAGE.

'nuff said. get an aftermarket one. Even a cheap $40 autometer will do the job :).

I checked it a little while ago with a thermocouple setup, its around the 70 degree mark.
Basically, other symptoms are that the car remains in the enrich state (lots of carbon buildup around exhaust, EXCESSIVE fuel consumption, high idle).

As for the clutch fan, I think it may be that. Although the fan turns by hand when the car is cold, with the engine on, it blows like all hell - I have a feeling it may be blowing too hard. The only thing is, I don't want to go spending AUD$200+ to put some electric fans in, if it won't fix the problem. Is there any thing else that could be the cause?

Thanks,
- Tim

remove the fan and see if it goes up

And get a fan from a wreckers. Why spend that much $ when there are a bazillion perfectly good fans waiting out there in recycling yards for far less?

Don't know if you guys had Fieros down there, but here's a good write-up about its e-fan...

where did you check it? you are talking 70F ?? my car is that temp after sitting all day, let alone after starting / running.

I wish I had your problem!(hot, hot , hot!) My car seeds a aftermarket temp gauge bad. What brand would you guys recomend?

Amur_ Aug 11, 2002 09:27 PM

Here's a place to browse around. Their gauges are really expensive. I picked mine up from a parts store for $20 Cdn plus tax. I did order my gauge pod from these guys, though. :)
