ugh.. problems

Got a new motor in my 10AE.. it's an s4 TII motor. Mods are as follows:
k+n cone filter, stock s-pipe till I rig up a better intake), FCD, s5 turbocharger, removed secondary throttle plates, 3" exhaust, s-afc, 720cc injectors (it's not tuned yet), emmissions totally removed (except charcoal canister), cold start assist system disconnected. Probably more, but I of course I can't think of them :)

Problems...
1: cold idle is non-existant. I know this is a problem with the no emmissions system, but is there any way to make it a little better?
2: hot idle is ass, 1500RPM bounce. Probably vacuum leaks, I'll have a look this weekend, but I just thought I'd put it up too.
3: turbo glows RED hot after a highway cruise sometimes, but I think this has gone away? I'm not sure.
4: it seems slow. Not really slow, just not what it used to be. This might be due to the lack of a proper TID, and less boost.. actually, now that I think about it, it probably is :)
5: gas milage is shitty - 300KM a tank, tops...
6: weird smells: sometimes the car smells STRONGLY of melting rubber or something, but every time this happens I have a look under the hood and can't find it.. any ideas?
7: Oil pressure. This actually might be the cause of everything, but I don't know if I can trust the gauge, the oil pressure is REALLY low. Where can I hook up a different gauge so that I know for sure?
it sits just above the zero at idle and a little below the 1/4 mark at say 4000RPM.

other than that, it is runs OK.. drives decent, great at low RPM/etc...

oh yeah, it NEVER smokes, EVER.

1) you said it has the secondary throttle plates removed. Whoever had it probably removed the thermowax as well, resulting in no cold idle.
2)TPS is probably mis-adjusted
3)timing is off. adjust the timeing with a timing light
4)also related to timing
5)most likely also related to timing and TPS
6)maybe from the hot turbo effecting some of the rubber stuff around it?
7)I don't know where to hook up an mechanical gauge. I need to know as well. I have the exact problem as you. ^_^
hope those help.

nobody had it before :)

thermowax is still in.

oohh yeah, the s5 turbo manifold is JDM and has no EGR capability, and my egr valve isn't hooked to anything... just thought I'd be 100% specific here :)

Regarding your oil pressure issue, do you still have the sender from your last engine? (copper coloured thing that sticks out below the oil pedistal) If so put it on your new engine. If the oil pressure is still low, that should confirm if you have a real pressure problem. I think when working the stock gauge should give you a reasonable idea if things are okay.

Regarding your shitty fuel economy, did you drive around on your roasted engine much? That might have clogged up the O2 sensor.

Do you still have a BAC valve? I don't really see any reason to remove that.

Do you have the S-AFC in? You seemed to like to really lean it out, perhaps that's why the turbo's red?

The weird smell of melted rubber could be synthetic engine oil. I once put castrol syntec 10-40 in my rx-7 and it smelled so horrible and made everyone in the house nauseous because I park in out garage. Changed the oil to castrol gtx 20 50 and the smell is gone.

You ran synethitcs in your rx-7!!!

Shame on you! :o

Terrh 11-18-04 12:03 PM

actually, there is some semi-synthetic oil in there, next oil change I'll put in some good old motomaster 20w50 :)

I don't have the s-afc doing anything at all, it's just set to 0% everywhere.

BAC valve is in.

I was thinking about swapping pressure senders, I'm going to do that this weekend too.

I have a brand new o2 sensor, but I can't get the damn old one out! I had a look at it when I pulled the motor, it looks OK, not charred or black at all.

at least the damn vibration that I couldn't figure out in the last motor is GONE! it must have been something internal...

Bump!
