Uggh, not another squealing noise through the speakers thread..
 

Ok, I had a new clutch put in my 7 about 400 miles or so ago(yes it's great) but just noticed something.

It squeals through the stereo system now. The same squeal you'd hear from your alternator through your system, only thing that got touched was the clutch.

The alternator/charging system are the same...(only thing the mech. did was pull negative tterminal to work on the car....)

The Stereo is still the same.

Nothng's changed.


I have however noticed that when I depress the clutch about 1/2" the squeal stops. I told my mech about this ,a nd he said that makes no sense and said I must have dome something to the car.....


So, do any of you guys have any idea why this would happen now..
I can attribute it to the clutch, since the noise stops when I depress it....

Is there anykind of solenoid on the clutch or tranny?
What gives?

This squeak is driving me mad.

ok well u said he detached the negative terminal right?... well a bad ground in ur electricle system will cause the sterio to whine if u will and my changing the clutch a good portion of the rear end had to come offf .... so im guessing somthing was jared loose and when ur clutch releases then it fixes the problum .... either that or the noise isnt coming from ur speakers and your pilot bearing is toast

Yep, noises like that are from grounding issues.

There are mutiple grounds that could be related to the problem.

There is a ground for the tranny/back of the motor to the fire wall

There are grounds on the mufflers

There is the main ground near the starter.

All these could be disturbed when doing a clutch job.

In addition, someone disassembling the dash to get the shift knob out (which is required to remove the tranny, which is requried to get to the clutch) could also have knocked a ground loose or pinced a wire if the stereo wires were incorrectly run.

Seems like I have some searching to do...

Anyone have any thoughts as to where to start?

I'm thinking Negative terminal first, then to the main grounds, then to the stereo?

I might as well just reground the whole car, and I just happen to know where to find a sticky on what I need to do just that....


( I should probably re ground everything anyways...)

Thanx guys, I didn't realise that it could be a grounding issue making the noise, but makes sense....

(also makes sense about the center console- ever since I got it back, I thought I was just hard of hearing, but now I'm pretty sure that there IS something going on in the headrest speakers(vert) oh well.....)

Also noticed a body-pre-cat grounding strap on my 89' convertible. Of course I didn't re-use the strap when installing the NA downpipe/parital headers (possibly causing idle issues with accessory usage & slope).

Yep, any of the exhaust grounds missing or damaged can cause noise on an aftermarket audio system (particularlly if the audio system parts are (shall we say-) not of great expense.
