U-Joint/driveshaft. Is it worth to replace?

I have my engine out because I am replacing it. I know from 83 on, all RX-7 have non-replaceable u-joints, you must replace the entire driveshaft. I was just wondering if it is really worth it to replace it right now. Advantages? if any.

Thanks

Keep the origonal. When it finally does start to fail, you will hear the "tink" sound when start out in 1st. After 1-200 miles you get some vibration. That give you some time to acquire and plan a swap.
Mine failed last week at 156,500 miles. I just took it easy until I had the replacement ready.

You can replace the u-joints. It's just a MASSIVE PITA to do.

Hard vibrations?

Try searching for 'vibration driveshaft' in 2nd Gen section only. You should find a description of the symptoms for vibration from the driveshaft amongst the threads. Happy reading. :)

There was a company that was selling new shafts shipped at 230 or so. Search and you might find the link.

Maybe search for driveshaft and my user name wankel7

SureShot, I thought the u-joints were not replaceable? What am I missing here?

RotorRX - you can buy an aftermarket driveshaft that is u-joint replacable. while stock doesn't let you replace the u-joint

yeah, just keep it until it breaks. I'm sure you know how easy it is to drop the driveshaft.
If you're going to do anything, change the tranny fluid, replace the clutch (if necessary), and clean the engine bay.

Thank guys. Guess I'll keep it until it drops on me.

donut 04-09-03 11:40 AM

how much would a new clutch cost?

RotorRX 04-09-03 12:55 PM

what would a clutch have to do with the driveshaft and u-joint?

RotorRX 04-09-03 12:57 PM

Anyway, it depends on what you want. You can get a pretty nice one for 300 or so. Look around and see what you want. What you asked though is a little to general of a question.

sorry bout that i was just curious..
but yea do think changing a driveshaft for the first time be hard for me? I have the manual book on how to fix everything.
