Type of electric air pump and cat needed to pass smog...
 

Since I have a s4 jspec motor with no emissions, i'll be trying the electric air pump with a new cat to try and pass smog. Since im here in CA, I need some suggestions. I always here about the corvette air pump because of its high flow but im wondering if this specific one is needed. I sure others would work but which ones compare? And for the cat...any new cat would work or should I get a specific one like the catco (suggested from an old search i did)? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance for the help.

I bought one off a 99 camaro. Actually any of the LT1/LS1 cars be it impalas, camaros, firebirds, vettes, and some trucks have the pump you can use.

Will that pas the visual test you have in California? I don't think so.

Any replacement cat should work. You might want to get Bonez cat because it stands up well against the rotary engine.

i had good luck with the random tech hi-flow, didn't even effect the sound much after replacing one of the pre-silencers. my old mechanic installed the cat on the end of my RB header, plumbed the stock air pump into it and went straight to the smog test. passed with great results, 6 months later the cover on the cat came off on the highway (cat still worked) thought it might be cheap welds or something but i guess the air pump was hooked up and blowing all the time (no air control valve) so there musta been some good heat building up in there! have one emissions test left on the car but the cat is toast now. hoping i can just install another one and pass again.

can anyone tell me how this was supposed to work stock? i am asuming the ACV would let the pump air in during startup and idle to keep the cat temps up, but bypass it during load ? (vacuum, whatever...) just wondering if i can jury rig something to do the same kinda thing to save the new cat....

Works pretty much like that. I think there is a wire going to it from the ECU that would be used to trigger an Epump. Can someone verify this?
