turning back odometer

When the new engine goes into my I want the odometer reading to match the engine miles. Is there anyway to turn the odo back or zero it out. I'm sure it would be difficult , but just want to know if it can be done and how, thanks

I don't reccomend it for legal purposes. If you plan on selling the car in the future it would be considered odometer fraud.

Digi7ech 02-27-06 02:28 PM

on a side track.

I think Rmagic sells a new cluster(starts at 0 miles) which also goes to 10k rpm :)

Syonyk 02-27-06 02:41 PM

Put a drill driving it at 150+mph for the better part of a year, wrap it over 1mil to 0.

Now that you've mentioned it, though, I may try to take apart my spare gauge cluster. I had some questions on how it was wired up internally anyway.

IT'S ILLEGAL TO DO THIS.

IT'S VERY ILLEGAL TO DO THIS.

I'll see what I can find out for you.

It is very easy to modify the odo, however as mentioned above it is very very illegal to do.

There are two odometers on a FC. One that displays the mileage that you can see, and one that controls the 20Kmile switch that is hidden inside, that you can not see.

It has been covered here in the past, so you may want to search next time before posting

But in case your search button is broken...

There is a small C clip on the odometer rods that holds the nembers in position. Remove the clip, and you can slide the numbers down the rod slightly and then move the number to the position you want. Then push them back tight and re-install the c clip.

But remember this is a federal offense... and highly ilegal.

ilegal yes but in some cases good, friends 240sx cluster broke we installed one with 1/3 the miles it be nice to set it back to the real miles.

jhammons01 02-27-06 03:20 PM

Jeez, Remind me to [b]never[/i] buy an FC off this board.

The engine being rebuilt is such a small portion of the total package. There is no way that Mileage is referring to the engine only.

Case in point, If i get some piece of shit with no paint, the doors don't close the interior is just rags, the tranny doesn't shift, the suspension is worn completly, ALL busing are gone the windows are sunburned.........(you get the picture) and say:

its rebuilt! with Low mileage!! great shape!!! Are you the guys that list some old piece of shit with only 18k miles on Autotrader?? Then I click on the photo and it's some 187k piece of shit.......

Wanked_FC 02-27-06 03:30 PM

any car over 10 years old in my state is exempt from odometer reporting anyways, so it would technically be illegal, but there'd be no recourse in my state.

kungfuroy 02-27-06 03:32 PM

The odometer is there for the chassis, not the engine. In addition to being illegal, most insurance companies keep a record of your odometer reading when you first sign up to keep track of your driven miles. I dont think they will be too happy with that.

Pen and paper? Log the mileage in your maintenance log book?

Congratulations. You're the 3rd person in the history of automobiles who wants to tamper with the odometer to *increase* the miles shown.

And what was said regarding the rest of the package is true - the engine is a MINOR part of the vehicle.

That said, there are cases when I'd agree with zeroing an odometer.

If you strip the car to the bare frame, repair any rust/dents/scrapes, and in the process of putting it back together replace *every* wear item (bushings, carpet, seats), rebuild the engine, totally refurb the transmission (new synchros, bearings, etc), and basically build yourself a brand new factory FC (or better than factory), I could understand wanting to zero the odometer. However, it would be easier (and probably at least partially legal) to just replace the cluster with an 0 mile unit. At that point, you're looking at something resembling a collector's/classic car, so rules might be different. And if you did that much work to a car, it'd likely be something you're planning to keep for a *long* time.

Other than that case, don't screw with it. It's not worth it.

Is there a way to install a second (aftermarket) odometer, to log engine miles?

JAPSPECGTUs 02-27-06 04:00 PM

How much is that R Magic odometer Digi7ech?

If you ever plan on selling the car, and it is currently in the CarFAX database, you probably don't want to mess with the odo. It could be a definite and obvious killer for any sale--at a minimum.

No idea. I saw it on some webpage a year or two ago.

I would assume a lot since you'll have to get it from Japan.

JAPSPECGTUs 02-27-06 06:29 PM

yeah...probably like...600 dollars..or more.

I really wish Rotary RUN was still importable from Aerodyne. I loved their Non-pop ups and front bumper.

:rlaugh: I guess that makes me number 4. My odometer doesn't work cause the gear in the tranny is stripped. When I go to replace my clutch I'm gonna wiz it forward a few hundred miles for my next safty inspection.

My bad I should have mentioned the vehicle is already exempt from mileage readings, since it came across the manheim auto auction with no mirrors, tail lights, engine or gauge cluster.

Sorry, I searched but didn't find anything right away, so I started a new thread, but for the sake of flames we'll say yes my search button is broken. :)

I'm well aware that the engine isn't the whole thing, the interior is already started to be replaced, Tein HE coilovers are in the future along with a T2 engine and tranny, endless brake kit, and many other things. The point is everything will be pretty much new, so i may as well set the odo back. And no I'm not that kind of person on autotrader cuz I'm never selling this car. It's not shitty or falling apart ne where. The previous owner got it running with a rebuilt na engine and tranny, but now i want more power so major upgrades are taking place and i want the gauges to match them. like i sadi the car is in good shape here are a few pics of current condition.

hmm since it doesnt seem like anyone was payin attention to this post i'll bump it up. your odometer is for the CHASSIS!

imo its really just dumb to turn your odometer back cause you got a new engine.

A sticky note in the glovebox with the mileage of when you rebuilt the motor isn't easy enough?

Or, heck, put it in your sigfile. *shrug*

Wh1t3 C0m3t 02-27-06 09:28 PM

i understand but, as I said the car is being completely overhualed, I am more interested in the mileage of the engine than the chasis, I'd rather calculate chasis miles than engine miles. thanks for the advice though everyone.

arghx 02-27-06 09:45 PM

My motor was rebuilt at about 137k but there's no way in hell I want it rolled back. I'm at 152k now.

'87 turbo II 02-27-06 09:50 PM

I'd only reset the odometer with new engine, suspension, interrior, fully ruts free painted exterrior, transmission, exhaust, LSD, breaks, and more, heck even the wiring and electrical. Then I'd call it safe to reset the miles, with tires that have full tread too. It'd just be best to not reset the odometer though.

13b4me 02-27-06 09:59 PM

Only time I advocate resetting an odometer is when your original breaks... Then you reset it back to your car's original mileage...

ProjectKN 02-27-06 10:31 PM

Set the odometer to zero or buy a gauge with less milleage, then register the odemeter NOT ACTUAL. I bought a new gauge, so i registered it not actual..

doesn't matter about reporting to the state. It is a federal offense (not state) to modify the odometer.

The only way to get around the Federal rule is to have a certifed odometer sticker placed on the car saying what the miles were before the odometer modification.
