Turn AC into tranny cooler
Is it possible? I have my radiator off and im looking at the ac core right their. Has anyone ever converted that into a transmission cooler? I imagine you could run different lines to it and the core serves the same cooling purposes?

interesting idea, seems like alot of hassle for nothin though.
as far as compatibility i dont know |
I would wonder if the passeges would allow the more viscious transmission flow through fast enough... Would also have to lose the orifice tube out of the condenser.

A lot of dirt track enduro guys around here do this. The main reason is because used AC condensors are MUCH cheaper than a tranny cooler of the same size. Since dirt track enduro is pretty much 100 laps of demo derby, most people mount them where the back seat used to be so they wont get destroyed and ruin the transmission. I have only seen guys do this with automatic transmissions, however. Not sure how well it would work with a manual.

well I worked with a fellow who had a Supercharged tiburon and his transmissions had alot of trouble untill he installed a tranny cooler. So I figure it couldnt hurt on a rx7 and the ac cooler is already RIGHT THEIR and mounted and big as hell. Shoot maybe turn it into a secondary oil cooler and put a inline electric pump in. Just something so that space isnt wasted. I can jb weld up any port I dont need and mount AN fitting's on the other ports.

Why exactly do you think you need a tranny cooler? Does your car have an automatic?
|
no, From my experience it is beneficial to a manual aswell during enduro race's which I plan to run in. I am very close to summit point which hosts them regularly. Not to mention keeping transmission fluid temps down is as important as keeping any automotive fluid cool, its at peak efficiency when it isnt burning hot.

sounds like you have put some thought into it. try it and let us know.
dont forget to drain your ac the right way. leave some ozone for us to kill. lol |
dude, a good synthetic gear oil is enough if you have a manual. It's nowhere near as sensitive to heat as an automatic.
|
meh if are trannys are less touchy then the hyundai trannys then sweet deal. Ill leave good-enough alone, How about running it as a oil cooler? A bigger one couldnt hurt.
|
Look at the aluminum condensor lines and look at the factory oil cooler lines. I dont think it would flow well enough to work well. Iirc, the condensor doesnt have endtanks, but is just one coiled line, am I wrong? Also, what pressure is the AC condensor designed to handle? I have no idea, but it is something to consider.

ac systems are over 100 psi, WAY more then the oil system could put out.
