Turbo transmission to non turbo rear

Does anyone have the length of the driveshaft to mate a turbo transmission to a non turbo rear end? I want one made by a local shop and figured someone out there has already measured once so I don't have to. Car is a series 5 if that matters. Thanks in advance.

My FSM says it is 966mm or 38.03 inches for a TII driveshaft. The n/a driveshaft is 967mm or38.07 inches. I would say if you make it to the length of the TII driveshaft you should be fine.

i would say you wouldnt because the flange is different.

na auto drive shaft should work.
Thanks Robert

I got one from an s5 if needed. Not sure if it will actually work though.

Mazdatrix has custom driveshafts for this as well.

Head mechanic at MazdaTrix agree's with Robert

It will work. But, also following always reliable advise from IceMark, it would be better if it was a bit longer than the AutoTranny version which is why MazdaTrix sells a swap specific replacement.

Call MazdaTrix and ask what extra length they added compared to a AutoTranny driveshaft to settle this on going debate. Then, as a bonus, you'll have your answer. Be sure and post their response for future searching.

dont use the auto driveshaft
it is way too short, the thing wobbles.

mazdatrix uses the T2 driveshaft with a different flange. If you buy the mazdatrix T2 driveshaft I will sell you the NA rear flange for 20 dollars. This will save you about 30 bucks, and then if you ever do get a T2 rear end you can switch the flange back. Thats what I did, and why I have the extra flange.

They do but just barely, The car shakes terrible, because the yoke is slightly over half way out... The driveshaft is too short..

We always take a NA driveshaft and a turbo driveshaft, and tell them to put the NA flange on the turbo shaft, and make sure its the same length exactly as the turbo shaft.

Or if you want the weaker one you can have the yoke of the turbo shaft welded onto a NA shaft... either way works..

Same length on all of them.

We've had three of the turbo shaft NA flange custom made ones on different cars and with no balancing it's very smooth.. same amount of shake as the stock driveshaft...

Ask the driveline shop what measurements you will need. Some shops measure shafts differently so you need to know this.

Thanks for the info guys. Does the turbo and non-turbo line use the same set of U-joints?

slo 09-19-06 01:21 PM

The Aftermarket driveshafts sold by mazdatrix and most others use a very common GM style U joint. The mazdatrix ones have actual spicer U joints.
Spicer makes the best U joints by far.

The FSM measurments were the total length. From where the flange bolts to the diff to the end of the yoke.Even if the flange is a different length it is the overall or total length that would be important. Given you use the TII flange with the proper bolt pattern.

staticguitar313 09-19-06 06:08 PM

if you use an auto driveshaft i will be forced to donkey punch you for being stupid, its an inch too short. if you want to tear up your output shaft on your tranny go right ahead

R_PROWESS 09-19-06 06:21 PM

if you go with a turbo driveshaft you can just have the bolt holls on the diff end of the uv mount cut to slots, but make sure it's well even on all 4 slots not too much material on either one for balancing issues, i did this and i feel no vibration (not saying there isnt any) but there shouldnt be enough to break things if I cant even feel it.

the n/a rear end will last just as long as a turbo rear end just depending on how you drive that is.

RXTek 09-19-06 07:55 PM

The reason I ask about the Ujoints is that I was curious if I could get a turbo yoke slap it on my NA driveline and cram everything back together. The length difference is only 1 mm so that should be cool. I just don't want to spend a ton because if/when I change the rear end I'll probably go to a 9 in and have to change everything again.
