Okay. I forgot to install the rear heat shield before installing the turbo on my girls t2. :facepalm4: Epic fail.

I could just install the front heat shield, but after some searching, I believe some one said (Mr Aaron Cake?) that the lower engine mount would eventually crap out in a few years due to heat.

So to remedy the issue, I was looking into turbo blanket. Or as I call them, turbo snuggies. Her turbo is a stock ht-18, so I believe that I would be looking for a T3 snuggie.

PTP seem to have good reviews with a decent price of about $100.

However, I can't seem to find much snuggies with a cutaway portion for the waste gate. The only one I could find like this was from an aussie company odonnell and it was for a t28, and this hell expensive one for .../.../t3 from another aussie company GCG by garrett.

Is there any turbo snuggles with the waste gate portion already cut away, or do I have to cut and hem it myself?

sounds like a load of BS to me, i have seen plenty of people running no heat shields. the motor mounts are garbage anyways.

not that i endorse it, the heat shields do serve a practical purpose.

I forgot to install that heat shield when I did my turbo swap. I've been daily driving it for like 5 months now on my who-knows-how-old motor mounts at 10 psi and haven't had any problems... Just sayin'.

I use this turbo blanket or "turbo beenie" on my BNR stage 4...

It doesn't have a particular "cut-out" for the wastegate. But it's price is very reasonable, and works great. Even though it is sold on eBay, this is not a typical piece of eBay junk.

The PTP blankets are awesome. I have one on my car and can literally lay my hand on it while the engine runs.

I got a T3 blanket from CX racing. On their webiste it's $80 or $90, I checked amazon and found the same one from them for $50.
It's probably not the best or fanciest one out there, but I can touch it while the car is running as well. It insulates well, fits pretty good without messing up the wastegate and has not burned up yet. It's only got 30 miles on it though!

Good luck with whatever you get, but I'd just forget about the OEM heatshield and get a turbo blanket. The heat shield is a PITA.

How about some big boy pants and just put the heat shields on? That would take what, an hour at the most? Blankets bad shields good.

I think the heat shields suck. Turbo blankets keep that particular area fairly cool.

blankets do help keep the heat in the exhaust, assuming you are willing to accept the consequences of the exhaust getting even hotter and staying hotter longer.

I've always been told that gaskets shouldn't be reused to ensure a good seal, and I dont want to wait for new ones to be shipped, again. That's why I was looking for an alternative.

I've been re-using the same Turbo to Manifold gasket for a while..... I don't blame you for not wanting to take the S4 turbo back off. It's a PITA compared to S5.

Just save the heat shield for later, and buy a blanket.

So what happens to the cats? Do they heat up more? Are the people quoting that they love their blankets have stock exhaust?

Karack correct me if I'm wrong but can you use the s5 exhuast gasket on the s4 turbo? s5 being reusable!

I have a 3" turbo back exhaust w/ a 3" high flow cat. I think wrapping the exhaust and putting a blanket on the Turbo was detrimental to my cat. The car was shooting smoldering chunks out of the muffler after installing the insulation. I pulled the downpipe and the cat was missing chunks. I think the extra heat was burning it up.

To expound a bit, for a drag car, yeah, blankets are great. For a street driven car I think they hold in TOO MUCH heat, for too long, and make the chira, housing and downpipe operate at too high of a temp.

Ive done oil changes on cars with blankets and have seen the oil just absolutely nuked after 500 miles.
Ive seen chiras and turbine housings rust-o-nuked from blankets.

Now on cars with shields the oil is not nuked, housings/downpipes dont turn in to rust piles and the oil and coolant lines actually come off without twisting into a mess.

Having used and built a few kilns before I realized that insulation is great for a kiln but bad for a chunk of cast iron when its repeated thousands of times over a year. How about that sweet peice of stainless downpipe so tenderly tig welded and polished. Ever see one of those after a year of being tightly wraped in heat tape? Not pretty.

Thats why I like shields over blankets.

Back in the day when I was doin this shit for cash I remember forgetting the shields a few times. Id grumble a bit and in less than an hour Id be done. Thats where the big boy pants comment came from.

Have a look at the turblown shields, they might even have them for stock applications. Ive never seen a better example of a turbo heat shield.

Also, I go by how the gasket looks, not what someone told me. Ive never had a leak on my car or customers cars back when I was wrenchin. Re-used newish turbo gaskets lots more than once.

I will say that 2nd gen owners do put up a bit of a fight when you tell them they need a new one.
