Which turbo for quick response?
 
I was wondering what kind of turbo would be best for quick response. i want quick response ( i was thinking some sort of ball-bearing turbo) and something around 350 horsepower. Would somethnig like a GT30R be good? or possibly a GT2871R. Or would i only need to do a new compressor like the H-trim. i not nessicarily looking for the cheapest.

How much money do you have to play with? GT3071R was what I have planned for the future.

Make sure to budget in all mods that must accompany the turbo (fuel, ecu, fmic, tuning, etc. etc.)

i'm not quite sure at the moment, as far as price. right now i getting information on what i want. i can get a greddy turbo kit for around 2500, but i dont know if it has the response i want. It comes with TS-06SH turbo. i would still need to upgrade the fuel and ECU. So i figure around another 1000 for the ECU and a little less than a grand for fuel. also about 1500 for upgraded intercooler and radiator. so about 6000 for all of that. i'd like to keep it under 5000 if possible, but i want good quality stuff. thanks

Both are actually "too small".
The 13B can easily spin a GT35R.
If you're worried about lag, drop down a turbine A/R to the 0.86(?) instead of the 1.06.

I will be going with the GT4088, which (and I cant really believe it) outspools the same turbo in the Ballistic series. Cant explain that...

I would say a garrett gt35....gt40 has some AMAZING potential as far as peak power (approaching 30psi with bridge porting) but for spool up you'll have something a bit quicker with the 35r

yeah i was planning to do the 350 Hp mark. everyone told me the T3T4 is the perfect turbo for me but i also heard the stage 3 is the one i need. please help

the gt35 is more of a 450hp turbo than a 350, a BNR hybrid is a much cheaper option

Some various information a friend of mine (Trevor) dug up about how certain turbos will respond to a stock S4 motor.

1. GT37 82mm 52-trim comp wheel with a 1.12 AR turbine housing. 17 psi at 3540 rpm up here in Tucson. 55 lbs of flow at 17 psi. Absolutely PIMP-TASTIC!

2. T61
I'm just going off the comp map here. 17 psi at 3700. 66 lbs of flow at 17 psi (IE you'll never even come close to using it). $650 or so. Other than what I know about the compressor I don't know what the "normal" configuration of this turbo is. Seems like all the companies hodge-podge a bunch of parts together with the T61 compressor wheel to create different abominations. Personally I like when everything was engineered to work together from the get-go by Garrett themselves...not joe-blow that resells turbos.

3. T-58
17 psi at 3740 and only 53 lbs of flow at 17 psi. Besides that see above comments about "abominations" and hodgepodging parts together.

4. GT40 82mm 50-trim C-wheel with a 1.19 AR T-housing
Again...another standard bearing GT series...just a bit larger. $100 more at $875 or so. 17 psi at 3880 and 55 lbs of flow.

5. 62-1
17 psi at 3910 and 63 lbs of flow.

6. GT40 56-trim
17 psi at 4070 and 59-60 lbs of flow. This is a weird one. I tracked down a official map for it but seems to be a c-wheel they developed all by itself. Not really attached to any specific setup. AGP turbo in phoenix sets up their own setups with it.

7. 60-1
17 psi at 4390 and 59-60 lbs of flow.

8. TS04
17 psi at 4480 and 56 lbs of flow

9. TO4E 60 trim
17 psi at 4500 and 49-50 lbs of flow

10. T04B V Series
17 psi at 4770 and 53 lbs of flow

11. T72
17 psi at 5210 and 81-82 lbs of flow

12. T66
17 psi at 5210 and 73 lbs of flow

13. TO4B H-3
17 psi at 5430 and 51-52 lbs of flow. Whatta piece!

14. T64
17 psi at 5690 and 70 lbs of flow

What happens if i use to small of a turbo? what i meant to say was some where around 300 for awhile, but want to eventually be between 350-400. so i was thinking build a good set up right now and then in the future get a bigger turbo and bigger injectors, so that is all i will have to buy when i am ready to upgrade to more power

if you use "too small" a turbo, you will have peak power WAYYY down low and it will drop off sharply when you rev it up since it is essetially choking the motor at higher rpms.

but for what you would pay for a gt30 you may as well get a gt35, I mean for a couple hundred bucks more its worth it. You will need to upgrade the intercooler, probably add fuel management and other fuel items ANYWAYS at that point, so why get a turbo that is really only minimally larger than your stocker?

this is also on my mind... ditching the 13b-re turbos, with HKS cast manifold and wanna do single turbo.. but go with ball bearing turbos or non bb turbo's?

I always recommend to go bigger if it's affordable.
Bigger turbo means more power at less boost.

i completly agree about the if its affordable, thats why im swaping to a AF61R when it gets warm again. i was sugesting the hybrids so that you can still use the stock manifold.

I'm not talking in extremes.
Yes, going overly big will drop response time.

Take for example, a Garrett T04B V-trim versus an H-trim.
The H-trim is bigger, but response is similar.
The H-trim flows about 10% to 15% more over the V-trim.
Bigger turbo, less boost for the same flow, about the same response time - why not? :)

Yes, commom misconception - it's all about the airflow, not the boost pressure.

That is correct.
More boost = more temperature increase on the intake temps.
Less boost = cooler intake temps = less stress for the engine

Hence the reason I am upgrading to a GT4088. The hybrids are good, but they arent as efficient as a full turbo upgrade.
