Turbo II "underheating"?

My 87 TII takes a while to get into operating temperature, and once it gets there, it usually doesn't go much further. I went on a highway cruise and it almost dropped below again. I have never seen this before and I don't think an intercooler would "cool" this well. I've never owned a turbo car before and this really gets me. Car runs very strong. I do get the odd puff of smoke from the muffler when I rev it up and after it starts reving down. Don't know if that is related. The person I bought the car from said it had a rebuild but didn't produce a reciept. The car's got 208,000kms(about 120,000 miles) on it. I didn't think it was possible to have an engine last that long on a TII and still run strong, so it must have a rebuild. The smoke kinda worries me a bit cause I don't know what it is, and my idle is higher then it should be.(Varies from 750-1500) Anyways if anyone can help me out with any of this stuff, thanks.

The two are not related. I'd wonder if your thermostat is stuck open...the smoke, are you saying that it's burning oil on decel? Does it smoke more on decel from 7K than from 4K?

that revving down with smoke coule quite possibly be a blown turbine in the turbo. when i had a blown turbine, i would get on the boost, then i would come back down to idle and there would be oil-smoke coming out the exhaust.

Not neccessarily burning oil, but burning something. I haven't really checked about the 7k and 4k thing, but from what I can remember, yes that is the case. Any small revs don't really bring any smoke. If my turbo is done, will it hurt to keep driving my car? Like I said, the car still runs strong and you can definatly hear the turbo whistling. Any thoughts on the subject of this thread?

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.

what color is the smoke?

Blue=oil possibly from turbo, or rotor oil seal allowing oil to get past rotor.

White=coolant from water seals

Black= rich a/f mixture

You might not even HAVE a thermostat...
