Turbo II - New Owner
My da gave me his Turbo II this weekend :)
Stuff I've fixed so far: 1 - New clutch rubber 2 - New gear lever gator (oil fumes not nice) List of jobs outstanding in rough order of priority: 1 - Replace fluids, particularly gearbox/diff oil. 2 - Rebuild/replace Clutch Master cylinder. 3 - Investigate poor braking performance i.e. overhaul brakes. 4 - Re-insulate wiring loom at front of car , so that lights don't stay up continually and so that switching between dipped and main beam works. 5 - New exhaust, probably stainless. Not sure whether to do the whole system. Don't want anything noisey, but it needs at least one back box. 6 - Glue passenger side door mirror. 7 - Fix loose cruise control column and investigate why it doesn't work. 8 - Iron out some cosmetic issues. Apart from all that it's fine :D It starts first time everytime, apart from when it's left for about 30mins in the heat after a run. Then it sometimes needs a bit of throttle. It idles smoothly and isn't burning oil excessively. It recently ran a timed 6.75s 0-60mph. If it can do that after 130,000 miles either it's been looked after well or it's been rebuilt. |
In the gearbox - synthetic gear oil.
I am not sure if Bondo Marine epoxy putty is available across the pond, but marine epoxy putty, maybe from another brand, is great for fixing broken dash & trim plastic. Don't mess with intake, exhaust, or boost for performance until you port the waste gate & can control the extra fuel to keep it from detonating. (I learned that the hard way.) Welcome to the forum - Enjoy the ride.. |
cheers mate.
don't worry there'll be no mods until I get to at least 7 on the above list! The cruise control column is just hanging around inside the dash - I haven't actually seen any broken pieces. It may have been messed with by the previous owner who tried to get it running. (There's evidence of a lot of hoking around for relays etc.) |

props to you for deciding to fix up the car before trying to slap on some big turbo like most of the new owners.

The plastic dash cowl has long tubular bosses extenting back from the front face to mount the 4 switch modules.
Here's a pic of my repair made with marine epoxy putty. http://208.62.166.66:82/guest/pics/plas20.jpg |

I assume clutch rubber = rebuild kit..

sorry dudes what a crap post! :o: (is there a regular laugh in here, one that's not apoplectic... :) )
To be fair I was a bit wrecked yesterday - drove the car from London to catch the 02:50 ferry to Dublin, got there at 6:00 then work at 10... Yes I meant the rubber on the clutch pedal. For the pedants out there I didn't "fix" it I "replaced" it. My intention was to contrast the lengths of the todo list and the done list. SureShot - can't see your pic, possibly because of the firewall here. Not sure what the four switch modules you refer to are. If the collections of rotary switches on the sides are individual modules then it would be (left to right along the dash) wipers/hazards, cruise behind the wheel LHS, indicator stalk behind wheel RHS then lights. Mine's RHD of course so it might be different for LHD. Looking forward to driving home to Belfast tomorrow night. They have limits in km/hr down here in the Republic now so at 120km/hr we get an extra 5mph over the UK 70mph max :D Thanks for the welcome, doddy |
Try this address for the picture of the back side of the dash cowl.
http://208.62.166.66:82/guest/pics/plas20.jpg This address is a FTP server with the factory manuals in pdf format. Download & print what you need. http://208.62.166.66:82/guest/Shop_Manuals |
thanks again mate.
The FTP is the problem. This client site has a strict IT usage policy. No FTP and Quota time for web use. (This forum and daihard forum don't show up on the quota time though ;) ) I should be able to access the pics on Saturday when I get home. I got all the manuals a while ago from rx7city.com, back when my dad originally got the car. |
