Turbo heatwrap?
1 Attachment(s)
Is this information correct and also would this fit on a s5 turbo? also what does he mean by needing a stainless stell wire to sinch it down?
Here is heat wrap for your turbo that is inexpensive. It is a piece measuring 12"x6" all you need is the stainless steel wire to sinch it down. I wraped my turbo (.63 turbine housing) with this stuff and it works like a charm. Also by wrapping your turbo it keeps the heat in and the turbo will spool faster. It reduced my under hood temps by at least half. |
it should fit that turbo, and by a wire... you have to hold it on somehow dont you?

I bought this stuff from speedmachineperformance.com for my old S5 turbo. You had to do a few measurments of the hotside of the turbo to cut the fabric to make a nice, clean looking fit. My engine bay temps were quite cooler but I would not go as far to say cut the temps in half. It looked great and was maybe a 30 min install after cutting the fabric and securing the metal zip ties. Shit kind of scared me at first because it smokes up to a certain temp just once then it works great the rest of the fabrics lifetime.
To be honest though when it came time for my engine swap and I pulled off my turbo that shit flaked everywhere. Seemed like it would not if lasted much longer and made me wonder if it could retain heat as well as it did when I first installed it. As for the metal zip ties they are the exact same design as a plastic zip tie but of course metal and they are a little harder to tighten down. I have them securing my thermo wrap on my downpipe as well. Just buy the "turbo stealth Kit" from SMP or just buy the metal zip ties there. |
thanks i appreciate it. i planned on buying this to wrap my turbo, buy some wrap for my down pipe, and then buy a wrap for my intercooler pipes, the pipe beside my intake is hot from the hot air in it, and i figure it doesnt do too much good for my intake. and then i'm gonna wrap the last pipe that goes into the elbow b/c its heat soakin off the engine pretty bad.

I've read nothing good about those cheap turbo wraps. You're better off with a proper turbo blanket or the stock heatshields.

Here's mine

I like them, but the downside is your EGT's get pretty high?.
|
Actually that's the whole point. Keeping the energy in the exhaust is beneficial for several reasons. It doesn't mean the engine is running leaner (obviously combustion is unaffected), just that more heat is reaching the temp sensor.
|
so where is the best place to buy a turbo blanket and dp Wrap....
|
i bet with the higher exhaust temps you wind up shootin more flames... is that right?

The good news:
When the turbo & manifold are insulated, the whole system cools slower after shutdown, so the castings are less likely to crack. The bad news: If you shut down right after a hot run, you will me more likely to coke the oil inside the turbo. The bottom line: Water cooled center sections work well, but you still should cool an insulated turbo down some after a hot run, before shutdown. |
good, i meant to ask about that. (if the rear iron was more likely to crack after a run) but you answered it

yeah that cheap stuff sucks, sure it helps a little but it doesnt last very long. you get what you pay for. get something like this (del slow's whip)

yea thats pretty nice, bout how much does it run?
|
Yummy - I'm checkin' out that LIM, UIM & TB setup.
Even the e-fan shroud is sweet. The only (slightly) weak spot on that whole setup is the thermostat neck.. |

(A) Not really, but it does throw flames after driving her for @2 hours non stop. Quote: Originally Posted by myfc3s I like them, but the downside is your EGT's get pretty high?.
