trying to re-attach negative battery terminal == SPARKZZZZZ
wtf... all i did was replaced the leading and trailing coils and put a new starter on
why the hell would hooking the battery back up be spark central? and i mean hardcore sparks enough to have blown out a chunk of the terminal lol the coils i dont think could do it and i am pretty sure i hooked the starter up properly (3rd one ive dealt with) ??? |
Sounds to me you possibly got the leads wrong on the starter, OR your hooking the terminals up incorrectly.

mine sparked pretty hard too. i got an optima redtop with a full system (2000+ watts), everything is hooked up right, same w/engine wires and it kicked sparks hard. i just ignored it and put the new terminal on. not saying you should ignore it, cause that would make me look like i dont know what the hell im talking about (mecp certified, meaning i get paid well to do car audio installs) but sometimes its just an excess amount of current, or you didnt ground something out correctly. worst case scenario is that you didnt plug a ground or something didnt connect right. best case, dunno, it shouldent spark though.

yeh the starter design is shotty because it *depends* on that rubber boot being in place and my rubber boot is the original so its ripped right where its needed the most, so the o-ring part of the power cable was actually touching the brass looking part of the starter casing and i don't know electrically what that was doing but holy fuck i'm glad i thought there might be something awry and didn't use my hand to put the negative terminal on... it would have taken a huge chunk of my finger out probably :o

While the boot helps, you should be able to put the cable in a direction where it isn't touching anything. I don't have a pic on me, but I do remember I had actually put mine on backwards form the way the boot would fit on due to the way my wiring harness was arranged. Are you sure you have it on the right post? I almost put mine on the wrong post and I think that could cause sparks.

yeh no im not stupid it was on the right post it was just touching itself haha
it wasnt touching the other post either it was just touching the brass outer shell and yeh theres no slack on that cable on mine so i cant really put it on any other way its fixed temporarily now but yeh like i said i need something more long term coz if that boot slips off its going to blow my car up or something en route |

i just rebuilt my engine and dropped it in yesterday.. but the starter is being a bitch? can you take a picture of which terminal is which? i've tried every way possible... that third little wire thats on the starter. i'm not too sure where that one goes either. i've hooked it up one way.. right when i ground the battery on the chassis, the starter just starts spinning until i un-ground the battery.. i hook it up another way and it kills ALL the power to the car. i cant figure it out. and i cant find a diagram for the starter either.. bAhumbug!!! |
