Trunk wont open
 

I have a 91 FC Convertible and the trunk wont open anymore. I have different tail lights that do not have the keyhole. Is there a panel in the back where the extra tire that can be unscrewed to access the trunk? Or am I going to have to break the tail lights in order to get into the trunk. Any advice would be nice. Thanks.

I have an 87 myself and from what I can remenber U should be able to access the trunk from the spare tire area by removing the plastic cover but it is not a big area and I have never tried this myself in order to get the trunk to open from the inside, also try to have someone work the release in the car while you move the trunk up and down this worked for me before to release a stuck trunk due to miss aligned mechanism both worth a shot before U ruin a perfectly good set of taillights...

thanks. I will look into that. But I have tried to have someone else work the cable from the inside while I pushed down and up on the trunk. So no luck there. I do have a spare set of taillights but they are the shorter ones. Again thanks for the info.

IDK if there is still activity in this website. But if you got your trunck open how did you do it, it happened to me and I'm having a lot of trouble with it.

Wow old thread. But I have had 3 verts and I do not think there is an opening from the cabin into the trunk.

So what would you suggest I do. I've given up on trying to open it from the cabin. Is there a way to do it?

hmm other than smashing your tail lights ? maybe cut a hole in the spare tire well and then weld it back up after?

a hole big enough for a tool or your hand

Smart then afterwards mess with the lock correct.

this is why i bought a S5 vert with the taillights i already want so i dont lose the key function

you can either knock the plastic liner out of cut a very small hole from inside the car into the trunk area on the drivers side, from there you can reach back and remove the plastic along the latch and taillight area and simply use your hand to unlatch it, its very simple ( so long as your trunk isnt stuffed with lots of junk )

no need to smash your taillights, if you need to cut a hole you can use a razor knife its just very thin plastic

one day Ill take a picture of the hole I have, I originally cut it like 20 years ago thinking it would let more bass into the car from the sub in the trunk, the by product of that was that I could access the latch if it failed.

:oldbawb: 20 years ago I was the "crazy one" who started cutting access holes at the dealer, where they previously would just cut and then replace the trunk lid (usually under some sort of insurance claim where they'd submit it that someone "broke in"). It's "more work" to snake in and access the latch but obviously the better choice.

Should of just left the trunks off. Anything to save Vert weight :lol:

I wouldn't say it was common but there were maybe a few a year. At least a couple of them were caused by shoddy aftermarket electronic latch actuator installations that would completely jam up.

I've always hated add-on alarm stuff because of the hack jobs many of the installers would do. So many crappy actuators installed with plumbers tape, self-tapping screws, and butchered harnesses :rant:

I can't remember if the trunk latch is electric (button).

IF it is try having someone push down on the trunk lid and another person presses the button to see if that would disengage the lock.

Its a cable, sometimes they may fall out of the latch, he was saying aftermarket alarms/keyless entry actuators would fail

All the way on the drivers side there is a flat section of the plastic,its kind of tucked in a bit and real obvious.
Put a flashlight in the trunk so you can see.
The cable works by pulling down on the latch so when you get access to the latch just tilt it downward
You can install something as simple as a pull string and leave it in the "spare tire" well ,pop the drain plug out, grab the string,open trunk.

I'll update you tomorrow and let you guys know if I accomplish it
