trouble starting... cant figure out what it is, plz help

i just did an engine swap, everything is connected properly. when i turn the key it cranks and itll get up to about 500 rpm before it quickly putters and dies. any clues? adjust my idle screw? any info about what to look at or check would be helpful. thanks in advance.

Does it start and then die, or not start at all? If it starts, does it stay on longer if you push a little on the pedal AFTER it starts? Before I adjusted the throttle stop screw, I had to push the pedal to give it more air to keep from dying.

Check your afm and your intake lines. This is what they usually act like when the AFM is either not opening, or the signal isnt getting to the ECU.

it gets half way started then dies.

Double check for vac leaks on everything your reconnected.. You might not be getting enough vaccum at start to get the AFM flap past 0%

Just to check, get a buddy to hold it open a tad while you crank it over..

Double check your coil connections..

Other than that.. hmm Could be a million things.

Is this the first time start on the new engine? Perhaps give it a pull to see if it starts that way if everything else fails

RXtion Turbo II 03-11-03 10:10 PM

there are no vac leaks in the system. i tried doing a push start but i was only going a couple miles per hour. how fast do i need to go, it was my friend pushing in the back and me on the side.. i dunno if this is adequate. the coils are fine... new plugs and everything. i havent started this engine other than what i described. its a jspec engine i had rebuilt and ported hence, 0 miles- its not dead. could it be flooded form previous attempts to start it? could it be the battery? my batt has like 150 amps less than it should last time i checked. it still cranks strong tho... could this cause the car to start only half way then die? let me know what u think

A newly rebuilt motor (0miles) will give trouble starting sometimes*... I had to pull start a rebuild once, but being pulled by another car, (towrope). Go about 15mph tops and let the clutch out in second, see what happens.
*I also had a completely different motor rebuilt and it started RIGHT UP.
Doesn't sound like the battery since you said it's cranking over strong.
What's the compression...?
How's the fuel filter...?
Don't overlook the obvious.

RXtion Turbo II 03-11-03 11:00 PM

fuel filter is brand new, compression is within spec... i guess ill try towing and see what happens. any one else with suggestions on things i should look at?

make sure ur brakes work.. haha sorry i'm gay

I have same problem.

MY 87 auto gxl won't turn over seems to have the same problem you have. but I'm still on orign motor something like the 46kmiles range I belive"forgot how many miles it has since I havn't been driving it". I have replaced sparkplugs, coils, got an ecu reading done at the dealership and nothing seemd to work . They said vacume was fine and compression was good. Time to find an rx7 specialist.

How is your compression "within spec" if you just had it rebuilt and ported? It takes time to build compression back after a rebuild.

Anyway, I had the same thing with my old TII, sorta... I had the motor rebuilt (it was already ported). It kept on flooding. My brother towed me behind his 89 and it started up.

Good luck!

Craig
