Tried Unflooding Procedure..What next?

I even used a little ATF. Took all four spark plugs out and cranked car...Squirt squirt then some ATF, I then cranked...still wouldnt start. Tried this 5 times on my 89T11 that I just bought...It started once like this but not again...Is thier something else I can do...does pushstarting it work better? One of the trailing plugs is cracked...will the engine still start as easy or not...Thnx.

replace the cracked plug now, dont get that thing caught in your engine.

roll starting works fine.

You could try pinching the fuel inlet hose (coming fromt he fuel filter under the master cyl) off with vice grips.

get the engine to ALMOST start.
(It will die immidiately for lack of fuel)

remove the vicegrips.

start the car normally.

This had worked for me in the past, no voodo.

forget the ATF.

We used to use ATF in our deflood procedure when I ran a dealership service department. You should let the ATF stay in the engine overnight or at least 8-10 hours. Dave Pace at Mazda NE headquarters told us about using washer fluid as well. He said that it would clean out the fuel from inside the housings after the situation known as "rotor washdown". If your oil metering pump was functioning properly, the oil seal on the housings should be regained after starting the engine, without needing ATF. ATF was recommended as a last resort to remedy washdown. The theory behind the washer fluid is almost like using dry-gas in your fuel tank. I still love the smoke cloud produced by starting an ATF soaked engine. My techs used to try to get a larger cloud than the one before each time they deflooded an engine. I think the guys at the Ford dealer downwind and next door to us really got the bad end of the stick. HA HA.

btw: be careful about soaking your engine in ATF because it can loosen up carbon deposits and send them into the turbo possibly causing damage. This is not common but it can still happen. You may also want to install a fuel cut off switch inside the car so that you can shut off the fuel before turning off the car. This will reduce the amount of pressure on the inside of the injectors which may be the root of the problem if they are leaking down after the engine is shut off. Good Luck!

have you tried pulling the EGI fuse cranking for a few sec. then replacing the fuse, and starting normaly? that's the only unflooding procedure that i have tried and it always works. also the fuel pump cut off switch works well from what i've heard.

For you guys who DO want to use the ATF deal(vs. push starting) you dont routinely have to pull sparkplugs. Von, you shoudl for sure change that bad plug though.

I still havent taken time to find this entrance on 89-91 NA engines, but on t2's, and 86-8's there are easy entrances directly to the chambers accessible without removing the plugs. You'll need a hand pump for your atf, or it will not work.

On a t2, find the BAC. Above it is a ? shaped hose. Remove it, and right above the BAC will be a niple sticking up. I stick the end of my pump down in there and push some atf in. THis nipple is divided and leads to the 2 primary intake runners, that, guess what, lead directly tot eh main intake ports and into each chamber. This port can also be used for water injetion while running the engine.

On a s4 NA, I use the top vacuum hose, on the throttle body front, which actually runs the oil injectors. Pumping atf slowly down into these pushes right through the injectors and into the engine. Again, I use this while running for water injection as well.
