tried and tried, but tranny won't go in

I've tried and tried and now my whole body is sore but my transmission won't go in...

I've realigned my clutch and it is better than yesturday but still it won't go in... about 1 1/2 inch from the engine........

i've tried pushing, pushing with the driveshaft.... wiggling,

i don't know what else i can do...

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 04:19 PM

well you know the tailshaft? where the DriveShaft(DS) goes in??? well, put the DS in the tranny end and spin it SLOWLY while someone tries to push the tranny in........it will line up and slip right in...(cue in sexual innuendo)

bingoboy 08-04-05 04:25 PM

^have had luck with the opposite way, give a car-illiterate non helping friend a wratchet and have him spin the engine from the alternator nut. also push the engine back as far as you can...although if your enginemounts are old this might bust them.

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 04:27 PM

lol..................that'll work too......:hahaha:

mwpayne 08-04-05 04:57 PM

KLanders advise me once to coat the end of the shaft with grease.
Mine slipped right in.

I really miss Beavis and Butthead in times like this...:p:

Do you have an alignment tool for the clutch disc? If not go to your local autoparts store and buy one for like under $5. Make sure that it is properly aligned and put a little bit of grease on the splines. Also to make things easier on you tie the clutch fork down. I do this by putting on a bolt where the slave cylinder mounts to and tie wire on the fork so that it doesn't move and wrap the wire around the bolt. It helps a heap to keep the throwout bearing and fork from moving. Besides that it should work it's way in but having the clutch aligned perfectly will make the most difference.

Cybaster 08-04-05 05:07 PM

i wish i greased it more when the tranny is out

now it is 1/2 inch away from going in.... my friend and my superior wiggling and pushing skills moved it abit again....

but this seems never ending... i wish i had an extra friend who is car-illiterate (and not busy) that can turn the alternator nut...

well one more thing is, when i turn the flywheel, the output shaft turns... so atleast i know the inputshaft is on the teeth of the clutch....

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 05:11 PM

did you not read my post??? my fiancee's dad and I ran into this problem in her S5.....do what I posted and it SHOULD go in.

Cybaster 08-04-05 05:21 PM

yeah, i tried... i will try the DS again

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 05:24 PM

make sure you pull the tranny out and THEN SLOWLY SPIN THE DS.....if it's missaligned NOW and you try to spin it it will do nothing (perhaps damage it).........

bingoboy 08-04-05 05:27 PM

this wasn't mentioned but, you DID changed the pilot bearing right? you're not trying to install with a totally thrashed/broken/busted/destroyed pilot bearing that may be giving you problems, right?

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 05:29 PM

^ ooooh nice one.

If his tranny is only 1/2 and inch from his engine that means that the tranny input shaft is already going through the clutch disc so the splines are already lined up. At this point if he does turn the tranny output shaft with the driveshaft it will either A turn the clutch disc which will turn the engine over, if he can get enough torque on it.

B do nothing cause if he's doing this like i did he's lying upsidedown under his car like i did it the first 2 times

or

C sping freely which means something is F'd Up.

BTW good luck man, i hope you put even just a little grease on the tranny input shaft where the clutch release bearing is suppost to slide over.

Let us know how it ends

wtdpn115 08-04-05 06:00 PM

um....easiest way for me was to have the tranny under a jack, and then lift up slowly and have someone move the crank pulley and wiggle in, make sure u have all the screws out .. that goes around the tranny

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 06:02 PM

see....when I had this problem I could almost get the tranny to line up but it slid right in when I did the trick I posted....couldn't hurt to try.

Cybaster 08-04-05 06:02 PM

still won't go in....
the looks of it i will have to take out the tranny again, and then RE-align it, re-grease it, then slowly get it in again.....

but not today.... my strength is drained....
i'll try to get another friend to help tomorrow... see how it goes.... i'll keep it updated

madrx7racer, i did... thanks your for help and idea, but it didn't work. i think its a good idea since i can use the DS as a lever and really push FORWARD with it, but it did not move the tranny at all for me... so i'll just have to keep trying...

Madrx7racer 08-04-05 06:07 PM

try again tomorrow........sometimes you just need to take a break and try again some other day............lol.........you hate her now but once she runs you will love her again.

You didn't answer the question about a new pilot bearing. I recently tore and engine down, and the e-shaft had 1-1/2 pilot bearings in it. Whoever put the last bearing in, didn't remove the first one. The second one had the rear half of it ground and shatttered.

If you are within 1/2" of mating, it is usually the alignment with the pilot bearing that is holding the tranny out.

forq2 08-04-05 06:21 PM

I had this problem and just got done with it yesterday. It took me 4 tries to the the SOB in. Make sure your transmission is perfectly level and i mean perfect. For me i had to go inside the car and use a punch to pry the shifter spot forward about 1/16 of an inch and it popped in the hole and everything slid in from there.

I dont know techincal name but when inside car and where you put the shifter in the trans is what I mean. It was hitting against the bottom of the body and wouldnt go level and it needs to be perfectly level to get in the pilot bearing

RXciting 08-04-05 06:38 PM

since you already have the tranny that far in, and your thinking of removing it tomorrow, then i have an idea, i kept to myself earlier because if it goes wrong your going to have to removed the tranny to re-align everything again since it will not go in.

Anyways, if the tranny is only 1/2" away from the engine, then bolt up the slave cylinder to the tranny that it works, (E.I. hook up the clutch line if you disconnected that instead, not something i'd do but you never know what someone might think).

Then have someone under the car holding the tranny steady and straight, and someone in the car to press the clutch pedal. if your disc is missaligned and whoever is under the car has enough strength to move the tranny around slightly, then this will make it easier to get the tranny input shaft into the e-shaft and through the pilot bearing.

If you get this wrong the the tranny moves around too much then you will have to remove it and re-alight the disc properly.

Good luck with w/e meathod you use. Hope it doesn't give you any more problems

Frank

when the transmission was out, i checked the pilot bearing... it was changed actually 1/2 a year ago, after the tranny is out, i stuck a finger in and moved the bearing around, it wasn't stuck, it wasn't broken...

since my tranny is 1/2in away and also the clutch alignment tool went in perfectly, the pilot bearing should be fine... i worry about the clutch being (not aligned enough) or mis-aligned more.

i will see if i can try your way of using the slave cylinder RXciting.

Digi7ech 08-04-05 07:17 PM

My tranny wouldn't go back in due to a fucked pilot bearing. I ended up paying my buddies to reinstall it. They rented a different pilot bearing puller and put the new one in. Slipped right on for them.

ilike2eatricers 08-04-05 08:01 PM

If it's half an inch from going in and you are sure the input shaft is in the teeth why not see if you can stick a bolt in there and tighten it slowly? If it's in like you say and everything else is fine I see no reason why tightening a bolt wouldnt pull the tranny in. I've done this several times and it's much easier than forcing it in with brute strength.

RotaryEvolution 08-04-05 08:09 PM

something to consider, the engine could be cocked slightly upward keeping the transmission bound up on the splines and pilot. if you have a cherry picker, hook it up to a point as far forward on the engine as possible and jack it up so the back end of the engine tilts downward. make sure the flywheel front face matches the angle of the bellhousing face and it should be good to go in. the only other thing that can be a headache is the stud at the 1oclock position can dig into the bellhousing and not want to allow it to go further, you could try removing that bolt and it may make it easier.

if none of those things helps then it has to be a disc alignment issue or the incorrect disc. you did try the disc to make sure the splines are the same as the input shaft?

norbak1258 08-04-05 08:48 PM

tilt then engine, so the back is at a small angel
