Transmission Woes

Just about had it with this damn thing and I only had it 3 weeks.

At any rate, looks like there is a transmission leak from the Shifter Tower (I think thats what it is called) and it has started grinding into each gear, and having difficulty shifting into 1st.

At this point I am going to pour some Stabil into it and throw a cover on it since I am scared of it locking into a gear or tearing it up more.

Anyone know a place either around Wisconsin, or a place that online sells and ships Remaned Transmissions for the FC5S?

Autozone quoted me ~$1000+$300 Core. A shop said ~$2200-$2500 to drop a new one in.

I am desperate....

These transmissions are a dime a dozen . They also don't like to be abused . What kind of lube are you running in it? Also Izzy has one and is not to far from where you are at. If you absolutely need a rebuild let me know I can set you up with a shop that won't break the bank . I'm just across the border.

Yeah, just got it so I am not sure, my plan was to change all the fluids, but other issues have popped up and I am only on my second tank of gas.

At this point with the synchros already going out, and this new leak I just want to get a better conditioned one if that means rebuild, bought used, remaned, either way.

It also seemed to have an issue where the clutch didn't grab until the RPMs went down then started to accelerate.

This is essentially the luck I have with every car I have ever bought. 39 in 10 years..

So much for "Practice makes perfect", eh?

This sounds like a slipping clutch. You could try an adjustment but if there is none, it's done.

BTW, worn clutch discs can cause shifting issues because they become warped from heat and don't allow full disengagement. Think of it looking like a Pringle's potato chip when the clutch is depressed. The high edges rub.

I would check master and slave cylinders before anything else. Just sayin...

I am more or less worried about the shift tower leaking. From what I researched it is not serviceable unless u pull the tranny

FührerTüner 02-25-16 02:13 PM

buy a new tranny. theyre like 100 bucks shipped.

From Where? Cheapest I have found is 500 on ebay, and I don't trust ebay sellers.. :egrin:

On here, n/a trannys are everywhere, people on ebay just think they are worth gold because its old, and says RX7

Hell i even got one sitting around, took it out've a running and driving 7, was a little notchy going into 2nd, but worked

Fair enough, I am waiting on the check for my loan I took out of my 401k, once I get that I will start poking around. Hoping by Monday cause the streets are free of salt after the rain we got last week.

I'm selling an N/A Trans with a Miata gear swap, the gearset has ~23k total on it and is from an '03 Miata. It makes the car more fun to drive as the gear ratios are closer together. PM me if you want the details.

i dont even keep n/a units anymore...
for me it it doesn't need 400ft lb capacity i go rx8 6 speed. if it does then it gets the turbo trans.

i've not come across a good N/a tranny, they all have some sort of issue.. mostly 2nd gear syncro is worn out...

i've got 2 rx8 trannys now with worn out synros lol...

^ This. Make absolutely sure your root problem isn't this.

There is a test I read in a good book on manual transmissions. Was this

https://books.google.ca/books/about/...ir_esc=y&hl=en

or

Don't remember which, cuz I read both. I think both may mention it.

Anyway, the test, I believe, is to have the car in neutral, engine on, vehicle stationary, then clutch pedal all the way in, edit: wait 10 seconds, and put it into reverse. If it grinds, your clutch is not disengaging properly.

But google "clutch disengagement test" to be sure if I remember it correctly.

BTW, the shifter portion (extension housing) is separate from the main transmission housing. Check to make sure the transmission itself has the correct oil level. Takes GL-4 or GL-5 80W-90 gear oil. Others use different fluids or viscosities, but make sure it's not a completely different fluid.

edit: https://books.google.ca/books?id=yPh...20test&f=false - see first column, bottom paragraph "reverse gear spin down test"

I can't believe the difference. So happy to have my baby back, even met a fellow rotary guy here in Eau Claire. Kinda a good experience even if it was expensive.

Clutch was shredded, flywheel gouged to hell, and the gears were smoked. Just gotta brake in the new clutch.
