transmission whine
 

When my car is in nuetral and the clutch is out, the trasmission makes a whining noise at idle (which is 1250-2500 rpm). Its not really loud, but its loud enough to make me notice the difference between clutch in and clutch out.

My car has a brand new clutch, installed by the previous owner (therefore i dont really know anything about it)

is this normal?

For cars this old, yeah its kinda normal. Can you hear it in other gears while driving or just in neutral?

Your idle is supposed to be like 750 once warmed up though, you might wanna check that.

transmission main bearings I had the same deal until I swaped trannys. Mine broke BTW. Just run some redline shockproof LIEGHTWIEGHT formula. That should quiet it down. Common thing for high milage trannys.

could be a bad throw out bearing.

I had a similar problem, running at high idle like yours. I lowered it to around 800 and the noise went away.

yep, like i said before, it sounds like a bad throw out bearing. when your throw out bearing is bad, it will whine while in idle and when you press the clutch in, it stops, release the clutch and the noise is there again. just go to an autoparts and ask for a throw out bearing.

yeah i have that problem im gonna fit new clutch next week so ill do the throw out bearing aswell let u know how it goes

easy test to determine if its your trans or throw out bearing: drive to about 30mph, start coasting in neutral, shut the engine off. if the noise stops once the engine stops its the throw out bearing.

Sounds to me like you have it backwards. If you have the whine without pushing it the clutch, it is not the TOB. If it whines with the clutch pushed in, it is the TOB. I still think it;s the tranny main bearings.

Also, put in a new pilot bearing and tranmission seals while you have the tranny out.

Nope sorry to disappoint but... I have had the same problem twice and the throwout bearing was bad. It basically fell apart and the part that is in contact with the pressure plate splines was sticking out of the bearing.This caused a ligjt grinding/ whining noise. With the clutch pressed in that loose piece was no longer loose and the noise went away.

you have it backwards... your throwout bearing is in use when the clutch pedal is pressed

his problem is the input shaft bearing in the tranny... he can be sure of this by moving the release fork towards the front of the car while idling and see if the noise disappears, this will make sure the release fork is not slightly rubbing the throwout bearing when the clutch isn't engaged

however it doesnt mean the tranny is about to die, mine whined when i bought the car (195k) to when the motor seized (240k), never got worse and i used cheap coastal 80w90

Glad to see I am not the only one........ I guess time will tell what the problem is, but I STILL WILL BET IT IS THE TRANNY, as stated above.
