Transmission sensor? What is it called? (picture inside)
 

Doing an auto to 5 speed swap, about ready to install transmission but i noticed this broken sensor. What is it? (S5 TII tranny)
Can i install the tranny and swap the sensor while its in the car you think? Because i want to put trans in and not wait on a sensor new sensor to arrive.

i believe thats the neutral switch and i think mine is broken too

If someone can confirm its just the neutral switch then cant i just bypass it on the car harness or something? If your saying yours is broken too then i assume its not so important?

That is for neutral switch and reverse lights. I believe not having it is miniscule effect as far as neutral switch is concerned. However without having some modifications your reverse lights will not work.

I believe that normally there is some plastic over that with wiring that connects to your harness and then operates your reverse lights. Without that there are usually two prongs (one of yours is broken off). When both prongs are present you can usually get some bullet crimps and create some patch wiring to go from the prongs to your harness. Thus making your reverse lights work.

I know for S5 those are pretty pricey replacement part. But IIRC S4 are much cheaper.

Yeah i literally just thought about it. Reverse lights? Aint nobody got time for that!

I haven't had time fo dat for about 3 years now. Damn reverse switch was shorted to ground, so every time I popped it in reverse it would blow a fuse. I just unplugged it, but never really got around to getting a new one... makes things kind of interesting when there's someone just sitting behind you and has no idea you're trying to back up though. And my horn doesn't work.

I should really fix these things :lol:

Yeah, for what it's worth I drove my turbo swap for several years without reverse lights. No adverse effects other than pissing people off in parking lots and parking garages. I wouldn't buy a new part for it, but it's a really quick fix if you find one with both prongs.

This fc wont be going on the road right away, i'll pick up a new sensor later on. Thanks guys.

Alright so i have another question. What does the sensor do on the exact other side of the transmission. This one has two blue wires coming out, both male ends if i recall. (will get picture in a bit)

S5 auto to S5 TII trans swap im doing. The only info about the wiring needed to be done on rotaryresurrections site is this:

"wire reverse lights. Find the 2 red wires on the switch on your 5sp transmission.

If working with an 89-91 car, find the 6 wire plug near the starter, and the 3 wire plug near that. ON the 3 wire plug there are 2 pins together and one offset; run a wire from this pin to either of the red wires on the trans.
On the 6 wire plug, locate the bottom row, center pin; run a wire from this pin to the other wire on the trans.

Step 5: Reverse Lights and Neutral Safety Switch
Locate the two red wires on the manual transmission, keep them in mind.
Look for a white three pronged clip that used to plug into the automatic transmission, cut all three wires and connect the bottom two together "this will allow you to start the vehicle" and connect the top of the three to one of the red wires on the manual transmission "doesnt matter which one, you will need to add some wire to complete the connection".
Now take the other red wire and run it into the inside of the vehicle through the shifter hole " you will need to add soem wire to complete the connection" locate the wiring harness in the shifter area that used to connect to the automatic shifter assembly.
Locate the 4 pin clip, now locate the black with yellow stripe wire and attach it to the wire you ran inside the car from the transmission "this will allow your revers lights to work".

The switch pictured is the reverse/5th gear switch (4-prong) or just the reverse switch (2-prong) if J-spec. The reverse functionality operates the reverse lights, and the 5th gear functionality is used by the ECU to switch the split air solenoid on/off and keep the "shift up" light from coming on in 5th gear (Do S5s have this light?).

The switch on the passenger side is the neutral switch, which has a really minor role in idle speed control.

FSM page F2-84 has diagrams and test procedure.

Alright, yeah it's suppose to be a jspec trans i should have stated that.

Very last question. Do the wires from the 6 wire plug or from the 3 wire plug go to the neutral switch? The "how to" on both methods listed above aren't specific enough for me.

Nobody knows which wires go to which sensor?

Pgs. Z-32 and Z-34 show that pin 1R is for the inhibitor switch on automatics and neutral switch on manuals. It's a G/B wire on the front harness in both halves of the diagram. The other half of the neutral switch just needs to be connected to ground.

Every time i look at an FSM that i find through google i dont exactly see the page numbers that you have listed (Z-32-34 & F2-84) I don't know why, but at least you have given me the info that i have been looking for. I'll look into it again. Thanks fellas.
