transmission rebuilds

does anyone know of good shops to rebuild, or how hard it is to rebuild oneself. or even anyone selling trannies. I have serious bearing noise that needs to be fixed. I have heard about fb gears in a fc housing, anyone got detailed instructions or links?

I have aslo heard that the tranny out of ford rangers is swappable, is this true

Any competent tranny shop should be able to do the rebuild. It's not unheard of to rebuild a tranny yourself. I helped a guy rebuild mine (in a different car) a few years back, but he used to work at a tranny shop. Just like rebuilding an engine really -- as long as you know where everything goes, how much to torque it, and keep everything clean, you should be okay. I'd definitely recommend a very good shop manual or something that details it out (sorry, I can't help there). There are tons more moving parts in a tranny than our engines. The big thing about a tranny rebuild is to be working in a spotless environment. Dirt is the biggest enemy to the internals of a tranny. Don't know how far fetched this is, but always heard that hair is the worst... If you want the experience and want to save cash, go for it, otherwise I'd check your local tranny shops first.
