Anyone have a writeup on how to install a rear seal on a manual tranny? Its a 91 N/A and i need to replace it, have the part, but want to know how to tackle it before i have problems. Is it just:

Unbolt exhaust header to cat;
unbolt Driveshaft;
bolt on seal (or just push on)
bolt driveshaft back up;
bolt back on the exhaust.

If im having problems unbolting the exhaust because of rusted bolts, what is the best way to remove them without having to install new bolts?

I just did this last weekend.
First off, unbolt the whole exhaust system, u can leave the mufflers hanging there though. Take off all the heat shields too.
-take off the clutch assembly ontop off the tranny.
-disconnect the speedo cable and the 2 wires going to the tranny.
-drain the tranny fluid
-support the engine with a jack
-unbolt the cross-member and all the tranny bolts
-take off the shifter
-unbolt the driveshaft and take it out(mark the driveshaft yolk in relationship to the differential!)
-pull out the tranny and drop it down
-take off the clutch pressure plate/disk( mark its relationship to the flywheel first!)
-use an impact gun with a 2 1/4" or 54mm IMPACT (6point) socket to get flywheel nut off.
-screw the flywheel nut on 3 a couple of turns
-use a crowbar and pry @ the flywheel and then turn it a little bit and keep prying until it comes off
- take off old seal, put new one in and reverse the shisnit, make sure u have a clutch alignment tool though.


use a lubricant to get those rusty bolts/nuts off

 

Uh, rear seal on the engine or rear seal on the transmission?
I think the original poster meant rear TRANSMISSION seal!
Basically, like you said - remove driveshaft, change seal, put back driveshaft...

The seal is just pressed in (no bolts). The rubber is molded to a metal ring. The metal ring and seal come out to gether. If you bought a new on I am sure you can see this already.

 

Is the dealer the only source for this seal, or do auto parts stores have them? How much?
