Transmission Problem, CAn't put into gear!

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday, on the way home, the 87 RX7 non-turbo I have suddenly lost the clutch pressure, which mean I can't put it into gear. I had to stop the car, pull the clutch pedal back several times and finally get some pressure back, then I can get to first gear, but then the pedal lost pressure and won't come back again. I finally, put it into 3rd gear and made it home.... I redo the clutch fluid, and there is nothing wrong with the clutch master or the slave. Somehow, the gear does not push back on the clutch or something... I don't know... What the hell is going on?

The last time I had my clutch changed back in 2001. They probably put some generic clutch on there. If there is a clutch problem and I have to have new one put on, what do you recommend. I'm not looking to race or anything... it's my work car, so I want it to last a bit longer, 'cause you know how much labor cost to take the clutch in and out.

Thanks for your help!

Liz.

hmm...if i was in your situation, i would get a new master cylendar and new ssclutch line. its an easy thing to fix.

I had a similiar problem, the clutch line was leaking and it drained the master reservoir, leading to the problem you describe. If there's still fluid above the min line and there's no leaking then I'd suspect the master or slave cylinder is bad, letting the fluid leak back around the seal.

That's strange

I just changed the master cylinder not too long ago. The strange thing is when I stop the car and pull the clutch back from the floor several times, then i get pressure and it'll hold. In the past, when the clutch was out, it never came back up. Anyhow, I'll buy a new master cylinder, or at least take a look inside the master cylinder again... it's still cheaper then getting a new clutch.

What brand of clutch kit do you recommend? In case I had to change the clutch.

Last summer I put the "Street/Strip" pressure plate and clutch disc from mazdatrix on my 1990 GTU and have been happy with it. It works fine for a daily driver. It's less than $300 for the pair. I think they're made by Daikin.

its the slave clinder

i put the centerforce dual friction clutch in my 89 gtus and i'm happy with it cuz i use it for daily driving for the most part.

Since you've replaced the master, try replacing the slave.

have you ever lost pressure in your brakes and you have to pump like a million times to get pressure then you pull over and see a line of brake fluid to where you are because you were stupid and left the ebrake up on your vw bug and the wheel cylinder has over extended... or is that just me. either way you probably lost fluid somewhere and like my wheel cylinder your slave cylinder over extended due to either having a really worn clutch or pressure plate. but i would have to see the car to make a real diag. so take it as BS
