Transmission mounts aren't lining up!

The Chasis of the car is a 1990 Convertible RX-7, it had an automatic transmission. And as of yesterday, I started the turbo swap. Got the NA motor out in about 4 hours. Had a manual rack in it and the turbo motor back in as of about 12:00 (noon today...).

Yayyyy.... Great, it's ready to run the harness's, and start... BUT WAIT! The transmission mount on the manual tranny is about 4" forward of the stock ears in the tranny tunnel! WTF??? WHY! I have never heard of this before!

Does someone make the transmission cross member to fix this problem, or is there anything to fix it? Or do I have to cut the transmission mounts off, and move them forward?

Someone help me out with this, everything was going very smooth until now!

Do you have that long ass spline gear out of the tranny into the engine (clutch) as far as its supposed to go? And is the engine mounted fo sho all the way forward? You don't have the engine in backwards do you :P
BTW - your avatar just screams "I'm cooler than you"

Also the engine is an S5 J-spec motor.

And everything else line up perfect (motor mounts, shifter.....)

The transmission and engine have never been pulled apart to my knowledge, I installed them as one unit, everything is were it should be exept the transmission mounts in the tunnel....

I had the same problem.....the motor mount had not sit completely in my case.....took a little pushing, pulling and sweat, and make sure you jack up the tranny to help the motor mounts sit in to the "J" shaped bracket.....after that just jack the tranyy up and it should line up.....of and I loosened my tranny mount to make it easier to move around.....Good luck.

there you go...
Hey if you convert J-spec from japanese to english it translates perfectly to "pain in the ass". Another rough translation is "why doesn't this fit?"
Been there, done that. Have fun LoL

I've heard about this happening putting an S5 into an S4, or something like that...I guess you're living proof, not that it helps you out much, lol....

I know other guys have ran into this, you might just have to wait a little bit until that "someone" gets online to help you out...

Cory Simpson 07-15-04 11:37 AM

Like I said, motor mounts are sitting perfect, Even it they weren't IT's 4 INCHS AWAY!!!!! Hell probably about 6" away from it....

I think it has something to do with the autmatic transmission that the car had.

exactly, go look for the pics I posted of Auto vs manual car mounts

I always thought verts had mounts for both manual and 5 speed. My friend put an auto in his vert (don't ask why he just felt like doing a 5-speed to auto swap) and he said the vert had mounts for both transmissions. If they are like the coupes then you will need a bracket.

No only one set of mounts....

Does anyone make the mount? Or do I have to get my brother to make it? :)

You didn't tip me off to this problem yesterday :p:

oh.....my bad sorry.

Cory Simpson 07-15-04 12:21 PM

Damn.... Well I don't have a car to scaveng the mounts off of, I suppose I could try removing them from the vert...

But I'll see my my brother has to say about it first. He's the welder :)
