Transmission makes noise

Well my transmission makes noise only on the first 3 gears
how much would it cost to just fix this? and how much would a full rebuild cost?

my car is a S5 N/A 1991

SimplyComplex 10-07-06 04:04 PM

Be moar specific. Where's the noise coming from? What kind of noise is it? Who framed Roger Rabbit?

Trueno102 10-07-06 04:09 PM

Well the noise is coming from the transmission, it might be the bearings
and theres also another noise that comes when i let go of the clutch

Is it like a "whirrr" or whining sound?

Trueno102 10-07-06 07:40 PM

yeah thats the kind of sound the clutch makes "whirr"
and the whining sound from the transmission which is only the first 3 gears

Clutch pedal not pressed/neutral – Input shaft bearing
Fix: replace

Clutch pedal pressed half way – Throwout bearing
Fix: replace

Clutch pedal fully pressed – Pilot bearing
Fix: replace

In all gears regardless of clutch – Transmission gears
Fix: New transmission
Band-Aid: Better transmission fluid

1st gear whining – Input shaft bearing
Fix: Replace

Grinding when shifting – Bad synchros; shift fork; bad clutch system
Fix: Replace
Band-Aid: Better transmission fluid; shift slow

Notchy shifting – Bad synchros; bad bearings
Fix: Synchros - Rebuild transmission/buy a new one; Bearings – replace
Band-Aid: Better transmission fluid can help temporarily

Carzy Driver 10-07-06 10:34 PM

does your transmission have any fluid in it?

yeah welcome to the club. From what I've read it doesn't do any damage but its reeeeeeeeeeally fckin annoying :wallbash:

sykminded 10-08-06 12:05 AM

wow.

lol

dude, old car, old transmission.

My 89 with only 63k on the clock whines and whirs like a hydraulic system. It just happens. The only reason you should be worried about your tranny is if your syncros are grinding.

Throw in some Redline MT-90, that might quiet it up a bit.

Otherwise, get over it.

(EDIT: I'm guessing the cost of a tranny rebuild is equivalant to an engine rebuild. But like I said, unless you're having trouble shifting, it's a waste of money)

Karack should be debuting his writeup on how to rebuild a FC trans here shortly.

TweakGames 01-14-08 01:02 PM

hello, sorry to bring this from the dead, but did he ever write up how to rebuild our transmissions?

Thanks

no noise in 4th gear 4th is direct drive, counter shaft in transmission is not being driven just idling. I think its a problem with that counter shaft end play or bearings. After 4 2nd gens they all have made that noise

BrettLinton7 01-27-08 03:08 PM

Wow, my transmission's got this same problem as well. But instead of tearing mine apart, I've got a spare I plan on dropping in sometime soon...

PierceSA22 01-29-08 08:37 PM

Does the input shaft bearing have to be pressed on? I am used to Hondas.

alexdimen 01-29-08 08:43 PM

My trans has 200k+ miles on it. It whirrs in all gears and has some ugly bearing noise. It still shifts well and hasn't gotten any worse since I put it in with 180k on it. *knocks on table*
