Transmission leak at tail shaft ?
 

Hey guys, i have a problem with my '90 gxl:

There is a major transmission oil leak that appears to be coming from the rear seal, where the driveshaft goes into the tranny. At first, I thought it was because the seal was very deteriorated. So i replaced it, making sure it was oriented as marked on the seal. Still the leak persists. I thought perhaps it is coming from the shifter oil reservoir, but i don't think so for two reasons. First, that is a small reservoir, and there is a large amount of fluid leaking. Second, that reservoir is pretty full upon inspection, so i think i can eliminate that as a possibility.

Is there another possible place for the fluid to be leaking? It is very clearly coming from the rear of the transmission. It looks like oil is coming out where the driveshaft goes in, and getting sprayed about as the driveshaft turns. There is oil everywhere, dripping on the exhaust heat shield and off either side of it.

well i would say its your oil seal.
i would inspect the output shaft for any nicks
it may be possable that the out put shaft barring is worn and its spinning out of round
or your output shaft is worn and is slightly too small to seal
just some iders

Ive never had that happen to me with a 7 tranny. But I had overfilled an sr20 tranny and it proceeded to leak out past the rear seal.

Yea, check the level first. If thats OK see if the driveshaft moves around when its in the rear of the tranny. You could have a worn bushing/slip joint or both. Look at the slip joint O.D. any grooves or damage? Any vibration when driving?

You really don't need to fill the extension housing on the trans?

excuse my ignorance, but I guess i need to define some terms here, to make sure we're talking about the same thing. i'm assuming what Turbine calls the output shaft is the same thing as what Jgrewe is calling the slip joint? i guess i would simply call it the front of the driveshaft. is that what we're talking about? if so, i did not inspect it for scores or marks. that is one idea.

no abnormal vibrations while driving..

this is the 2nd driveshaft i've used, since my last one had a bad front u-joint. the leak is there, using either driveshaft. maybe this points to a worn bearing/bushing/slip-joint?

reted - i'm new to rx7s, so, the extension housing i'm assuming is filled from the top, where the ball of the shift lever goes in, correct? if so, yes i'm sure i don't need to fill it. the level is high enough to cover the entire ball.

It doesn't take much oil leaking out to make a mess under the car once it starts being sprayed around by the driveshaft..............

The extension housing, where the shift lever resides, is filled separately from the transmission. The oil level in there should be down near the bottom of the housing, where the small ball on the shifter clips into the socket on the control rod. The level should just fill that socket, so that the spring clip is not submerged.

It is a notorious area for leaks. There are small (hollow) roll pins in the housing that will conduct oil out if it's overfilled.

hmmm ok. I definitely filled mine higher than the spring clip when i replaced my shifter bushings. thank you for the tip silver7! i will remove some fluid!
