Transmission Issues ???

I have an 88 vert with about 130,000 miles on her and I need help narrowing down a transmission noise before I take it to the shop. Here's what's happening. At low speeds (5-10 mph)with the clutch engaged I'm hearing a chirping sound coming from underneath the car. When I press the clutch pedal in it stops. If the I increase the speed to 15 to 20mph or decellerate from a high speed the chirping turns to more of a scraping sound. I am also getting a shutter in first and reverse. I installed a RP standard street clutch about 6 months ago. I have not noticed any lack in performance outside the noise and the shutter. Shifting is fine and I haven't noticed any clutch slippage.

This started about three months ago. About about two months ago I put redline transmission and differential oil in. The chirping stopped. Unitl yesterday. I think it's time for me to check this out more thoroughly but I would like to know where to start. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you resurface the flywheel when you put in the new clutch?

is it a nasty gridning sound? well, not grindin just un pleasant? minght be a syncho, or a bearing within the drive assembly

Is it like a clicking sound? That's what i am getting after the clutch was replaced. I have narrowed it down to 2 reasons. 1) the throwout bearing. This is because on my 85-SE, i was getting this metallic grinding noise which would go away with the slight depressing of the clutch pedal. I simply adjusted the pedal by screwing in the rod between the pedal and master cylinder.
2) When I did a search on the forum, there were several people with similar problems and it seemed like the consensus opinion was a bad front or rear tranny bearing.
Strangely, from my experience and what i have read, it seems to happen after a clutch job or tranny removal.

It's not really a clicking. but at times it does sound like a gringing noise. And no I didn't resurface the fly wheel. Should I have?

hmm...this sounds like a tranny problem more than a clutch one.

One quick way to get some more 411 about things is to get under your car, remove the filler plugs and stick a finger inside (into the fluid.) If it smells like your mom - j/k! - er, if it smells burnt then you can be pretty sure that something in the tranny is hurting.

ttyl,
Amur_, being oh-so-close to helpful tonight... :D

I think it's time to shit a brick! That sounds baaaaaaaaad!

Check your fluid, too. If there's any in there. If it's either empty or the fluid's toasted (it will have a strong, unpleasant smell,) drain it and replace with Redline MT-90 (*not* MTL-90.) This is the best stuff you can get for your tranny. You'll need 3 quarts. And a suction gun, which can be found easily and is cheap.

Hope it's nothing too gross. :)

OK It's not the clutch or flywheel.

If the I increase the speed to 15 to 20mph or decellerate from a high speed the chirp

This could something simple, like an out of place heat shield..

I am also getting a shutter in first and reverse.

Check the U-joints.
Like Rico05 says, a new chutch on a scorched flywheel can do that..
