Tranny Trouble

I pulled into a parking space today with the car in Second. I went to put it in nuetral and the shifter wouldn't budge. I Managed to push the car out of the parking spot and get it moving forward (had to take off in second), eventually I was able to shift into third. I came to a stop at a light and took off in first, shifted into second, and again it stuck, but eventually I was able to shift. I finally got home by skipping second gear and going straight to third. I pulled into my driveway in 1st and again I could not get the trans out of gear. So I let the car roll out of the driveway and drove off and it shifted out of first just fine once it got moving.

Does anyone know what would cause this? I'm hoping it's something to do with the shifter not inside the tranny.

Any help is Appreciated.

Check the bushings and/or metal shims in the shift lever housing. I once experienced a similar problem that was caused by a broken metal shim under the lower shift lever bushing. The shim had snapped off and was restricting the movement of the shift lever.

did you replace the shim? How did you figure out that it was broken? I stuck my finger in the housing, but could not see due to the oil present. Did you have to drain the oil first?

Thanks.

I removed my shift lever to repalce the bushings and the rubber seal which is part of the mounting bracket. The bottom bushing sits on top of a thin spring washer. The spring washer was broken, and a part of it was hanging out and interfering with the shift lever mechanism. I eliminated the washer when I changed the bushings. Repalcement bushing come with a spring washers but the washer is only used on the top bushing. Put it back together and me shifting difficultly was cured.

the shifter bushing should be two metal rings and two rubber bushing one of each for the top and bottom. makes a world of differnce having good ones in :)

Also check see if your low on fluid mine was and it cleared it right up once I changed the fluid.
