Tranny problem

If there is another post on this sorry spent the last 1.5hours looking ans didnt see

alright, my clutch was bad (stock clutch in an 88 GXL NA only 36k on it when i had the clutch replaced) and got the car back, was a slight noise in gear figured its normal (at least on american trucks  ) well, progressivly gotten worse and i hit that 500 mile mark, and brought it back to the mechanic who i paid to do the clutch. he brings it up on the lift, and sais its my tranny, i go under and its coming from the last 4-5 inches of the transmission

now i dont do much tranny work but is that just some type of bearing? it only makes the noise while the driveshaft spins, and its stops in 4th gear outright

noise kind of sounds like a scrape and its a pretty pattern like beat so its on 1 side of whatever broke when they pulled the tranny. they refuse to take any credit for whatever happend and told me i have to bring it to AAMCO and its a minimum of 1100 to fix...

should i listen to the man who will get a cut of the cash? or is there somethign i can do myself?

The last 4-5 inches of the transmission is in the tail housing. The only thing in there is the output shaft & the 3 shift rods/shift arm. The nearest bearing would be in the gearbox itself, so you're probably just hearing the noise resonating in the tail housing.

The FSM manual transmission section will give you an idea of what's in there. I took a snapshot of page 7A-7 to point out the bearings in there. The rear mainshaft bearing is close to the area you're talking about, so it might be it. Anyway you look at it, the transmission would need to be rebuilt.

:( ok rebuild i guess then, anybody know of good tranny shops in the area of volusia county in FL? i refuse to have anything to do with the scumbags that dicided to blame me for the fact is didnt do this till after they put the clutch in.

the noise stops in 4th gear because the ratio is 1 to 1. input shaft is turning same speed as the output shaft. so if you wanna do it yourself. you need to crack the trans open and see whats up

at my house down here i have nothign in way of tools lifts... basicly nething but wrenches and a little jack, and everything is pissing me off right now between bank school job and i just wanna know of anybody who knows of/has a trustworthy shop in volusia country FL that wont fuck with me, im ready to just crash the car into the shop that decided to fuck me , and fill it with gas and blow the place up till it turns to a pile of ashes, then piss on it to make sure its done

God..It doesn't take much to Change the trans out.You can get another one USED on forum here in the Sec Gen Parts section.Maybe someone local too.Transmissions go from 75-250 depending on Who and where. Also what type of car too.TII Transmissions tend to cost a little more from 100-300...If you are paying More then that,it should be a Real LOW mileage Trans,or Rebuilt...another note,Most shops when they Replace the transmission,Don't bother to Change the Pilot bearing as it is a pain in the ass to get out and cuts into their Paid Rate for doing the trans(pilot bearing can Come out in 10 seconds or three hours, depends on what they use).Ask them if they changed it,and then ask WHERE it is located. If they don't Say the back of the Shaft(eccentric shaft/Crank Shaft) then They didn't Change it!..That could be your Problem.Throw out bearings sometimes let go on Clutch install(One of mine lasted 5 km ..blew it all to shit).that's another Scenario..but I would get a second opinion from someone who can handle the Job.Personally,If you have a Buddy capable of changing a transmission, give it to him to do,and Throw him a steak and case of beer for doing it(after wards!!.heh.or you'll have a Drunk install!!..Haha!).anyways..ramblin and typing..hope that helps!

i was told by a local tranny shop that they have a 6spd rx8 transmission that will fit. i kinda gave them a wierd look and said i dunno ill think about it... 150 for the transmission doesnt seem..... right

and btw, i would chamge out the trans myself. given i had the time, tools, and such to do this at my house.... i mean pulling an engine is 1 thing, but i dont have the ability to drop my exaust system in my driveway

The RX-8 transmission is shorter. The shifter would come up in the middle of your stereo unless you A) move the engine back B) modify the trans tail housing. Your average mechanic will try to convince you of a lot of things if it serves them.

I have a trans from a 86 GXl torn down, works perfect. your more than welcome to take it for free. Its in 3 complete sections now. Bellhousing. main body, and tail shaft housing.

I have no need for this trans any more.

I had a custom 5 speed made from Mazda truck gear sets and a T2 tranny case. and others.

drop me a PM or something, I can leave out in the front of my property, so you can just grab it and go! Happy motoring.

PS: a trans drop should take no more than 30 minutes..for me. with just basic tools. like a 12mm or 10mm for drive shaft, 14mm for the bellhousing and starter bolts. and a 17 mm for the trans mount..easy stuff.

I can turn you onto a shop thats does all my rotary exhaust work, get a complete pipe single for under $120.installed.
