Tranny input shaft play
What is the maximum amount of play that is allowed for the input shaft of the tranny? I searched the FSM but could find nothing. just shy of 1/32" but it seems to be a bit much. Then again the shaft is fairly far out and there would be the pilot bearing supporting it.
Just want to know before I go through all the trouble ya know, thanks much. Probably should mention.... S5 TII tranny... thanks |
No-one has an idea of how much is too much?

Both of my NA trannies have play in them but the TII one whick has about 50k does not.
Perhaps changing the front cover would help? |
As in none at all, solid as a rock kinda thing?
I don't think changing the cover will help as it shouldn't make direct contact with input shaft. Anyone know for sure or should I call one of the abundant shops up here on the east coast? :rlaugh: |
well you adjust the end play simply by thrust bearings (washers). Standard thrust play is 0 to .1 mm or 0 to 4 inches. Adjusting shim thickness .1mm(0-.004 inches) or .3 mm. This is for the mainshaft, but same thing. You might want to double check on this but i got the info from www.alldatapro.com. It's a website we use for about everything at my college.

I asked the same question here with no answer just before my last rebuild went in.
I had quite a bit of play, and less than 20,000 miles on it since trans front cover was replaced. I just went ahead and put in the motor as I didn't expect the motor itself to last long. That was 20,000 miles of racing and daily driving ago- half of that on race tires ~400hp. I checked my J-spec's transmission and it has play as well. Sadly, i will be checking my trans shaft play again as the motor finally died by eating an EGT sensor probe (stuck side seal now). |
I never saw a spec for allowable play, but any time I change trannies (far too often) I just buy a new front cover (Which includes the bushing) from Mazda Motor Sports and throw it on. IIRC, they run about $20-$30 and well worth it for the peace of mind.

Wow, thanks guys. I learned something new. I was unaware that the frontcover actually plays a part in the play of the tranny. Will definately order one. Are there shims as well that can take some of the play out? I wasn't seeing those in the FSM
BlueTII I did see that thread you started when I searched, good to know that you managed 20,000 miles and still going strong. Thanks a bunch guys. -B |
