tranny fun!!!
 

Well, here it is:
I was driving to get some gas today, and when I left the gas station, I pulled out, stopped and put the car in neutral. When trying to get it into first, it felt like I was trying to shift through sludge. I baby the car home, just in time to have 1st and 2nd stop working all together. Upside-trans shifts smoothly now. Downside-burned up a clutch trying to drive it home the rest of the way.

I do belive that this is a proper time to start crying myself to sleep at night, being that I am nearly sure that I just blew the tranny. Anyone with a different diagnosis, please let me know.

Other then that, I do belive that the rest of the internals are soon to be shot, being that I drove the car after the tranny blew. The local junkyard wants $450 for an s5 tranny with 65k on it. If anyone can get me a fresh or nearly fresh rebuilt s5 N/A tranny for under $1k, please let me know ASAP.

Come on guys, I need some help here. I am starting to think, being that my brain kinda shut down while looking at oncoming traffic heading at me, I think that I just broke the 1-2 shift fork. IF this is the case, and that is a mighty big IF, being that I drove the car home in third (I would reccomend this to nobody, unless you wanna see clouds of clutch flying out), I think that I blew the rest of the tranny in the process. I grabbed the shifter and pulled with both hands as hard as I could to get it outta first, being that I knew that first was dead, and then, suddenly, it broke free. Then I didn't have second, either. I think that I just broke the shift fork in two. If this is the case, like I said, I think that I could get away with just a tranny rebuild. If anyone knows where to get mazda-only stuff for this process, besides the dealer who wants $560 without any shift forks, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

Note: I have an s5 N/A with all N/A equipment, I will not be spending the money to upgrade to TII stuff (yet...). Just let me know if you have ANY info on rebuild stuff or anyone that has a tranny for sale.

Lol, damn dude, that sucks. I think my tranny is living on borrowed time as well. On that note, how wasily do the other manual trannies fit? Do they all have the same bolt patterns and what-not? If that's so, I'd just grab any good 5-speed you can get, and if it's a TII tranny, all the better, eh? :D

Or, you can just check the "FOR SALE" section on the front page of the forum, and pick up a used N/A tranny for 100 bucks or so, drop it in, and THEN worry about getting a freshly rebuilt one while you're driving your 7 around :)

If you get a transmission that's not for an N/A FC, then your driveshaft is likely not to fit, requiring a custom driveshaft ($$$). Keep in mind mounting points may be different for other brands. I'd spend the money to get it rebuilt, or if I had lots of time on my hands, and not much to lose, then I might attempt rebuilding it myself.

How many different transmissions are there for the FC? I know there's at least the base, Turbo II, and I could swear there was a second NA tranny with higher gearing.

I have a good s5 tranny from a 90 N/A. I'm driving up to Columbus Ohio this saturday. I'm only needing $200 for it. Let me know today or tomorrow if you are interested and I'll make arrangements to meet you.

My guess is your tranny is OK, but the clutch is shot. No big deal.

Change the tranny oil to synthetic gear lube & do a clutch job.

Also check your clutch master cylinder fluid.
It should be full & clear as beer.
Any dark tint is worn rubber from the piston cup.

I agree...trannies dont go from one sec to the next..they go over time...I think you pressure plate is shot...without that you cant shift..before you buy a tranny, check all clutch related parts....slave cylinder, fluid level, hose and mayeb even bleed it...then if all those are ok, take the tranny out and look at the pressure plate...some of the fingers (I think that is what they are called) might be still engaged( pushed in and stuck)...if not...then take off the late and inspect the clutch AND!!! replace the pilot bearing...if the pilot bearing is shot and the shaft is sticking to it then you cant shift WHEN the car is running because the shaft spinns with the motor...does she shift when off? look into this before you buy a tranny...you have to take it off anyway to replace it

I could have told you that, but these guys want a fortune for everything, except for buying the initial car. I know for a fact that they bought this RX-7 running and drivable for $150, and they wanted $4500 for the engine with 60k on it. I laughed in their faces and told them that I could build a brand new engine for about 1k more with all new parts. The problem is that they never figured out why I was mad about it.

It all boils down to the fact that it is a rarer car and they will bleed anyone to death who wants anything off of it.

To the person going to columbus, I was wondering what are the details on the tranny (milage, rebuild (if applicable), condition, what it came out of, etc.). I am going to be pulling my trans soon (maybe even today), so I can find out what my damage is. If its just the roll pin in the shift fork (which it felt like what I broke when popping it out of gear), I will take the $.50 fix as opposed to the $200 replacement. I am heavily considering a rebuild, except I don't have the money for it right now.

Clutches:
I know that I need a clutch now, being that the clouds of clutch material coming out when I had to take off in 3rd gear really killed it. I was looking at a centerforce 2 (not the dual friction). Any words yay or nay about this or reccomendations for any other clutch? We have used centerforces on the cars we race, and never had a problem. I also live a stones throw from quartermaster, except I don't like the idea of $1k for a clutch, $2k for a dual disk.

Tranny fluid:
I am going to put new fluid in my trans (duh), but I don't know which brand to go with. I have heard alot of good things about Redline MTL and MT-90, but I have also heard alot of good things from testing of the Royal Purple synchromesh fluid. I am wondering if anyone has good advice about which to go with. I would like it if only people who have seen both in use reply, but if you used one or the other, drop me a good, bad, or indifferent word about it.
