Tranny Drain Bolt?

What size is the larger of the 2 transmission drain bolts??
Is the rear diff drain bolt the same size?

Or do I need some kinda of special socket for this.
Any help is appreciated, my car is up on stands for the night!

umm.. 19 millimeters is ringing a bell for me

i changed my tranny fluid not to long ago and checked the diff..

one of them i was using mostly was a 19 mil wrench.. :)

Honestly, I don't remember the size. I just always use a pair of vice grips.

i realize the bolts dont need that much torque, but personally i would always use a wrench.. adjustable wrench if you dont want to make more than 1 trip to the tool box ;)

btw - i like your link, Aaron.. thats pretty clever! i actually rigged up a hand pump to pump it into the tranny, and i thought i was getting creative! lol.. :)

The bolt is square, so using vice grips doesn't really bother me. I would NEVER use vice-grips on another bolt unless it was a method of last resort.

Yeah, I like the "air pump" for tranny oil. I once pumped 4 quarts from one of the big jugs into two trannies in about 3 minutes. Works very well.

And believe me when I say that if you over inflate the bottle, it will BLOW UP.

Thanks for that tip Aaron! I was wondering about that.

The bolt I am referring to is the BIG round flat one, not that square-ish one.

My Hayne's manual says I need to unplug both of the drain bolts AND the fill bolts, is that right?

I want to say its a 24mm...

Just be sure to put a new gasket on the drain bolt, might get a slow drip like I did. Had to drain it again & get a new gasket.
BTW, use GM Syncromesh, acquired at any GM dealer.

it's a 24mm. the smaller one is a 23mm

is your car a turboII or n/a?

bingoboy 06-29-03 02:11 PM

always always remove the fill plug first. if you unplug the drain plug first and the fill plug is an unholy bitch to remove you are stuck with a car that has no trans fluid in it and you can't drive it anywhere to get that worked on.

I have a Turbo II, Black13B.

Ok, cool I'll hopeuflly get that done tonight, once I get a freakin 24mm socket.
