TPS resistance increases then decreases
 

I just bought a s5 tII on friday since my first s5 tII was stolen 2 weeks ago.

It bucks a little around 3k.

I checked the tps today and found that the resistance on one of the plungers (when slowly opened) increases at first then decreases then increases again before reaching 5.??? K Ohms.

Is that a bad TPS or is that how they are supposed to work? I was under the impression that they were supposed to be a linear increase as you released the plunger.

Yeah, they're supposed to be linear. Someone was mentioning that cleaning them sometimes fixed jumpy ones that remained pretty linear, but you'd have to search for that. Best bet is to replace it to be 100% positive. (good job on a s5 TII, aint no rx7 better!) :D

It doesn't sound like a dead spot, so maybe a good cleaning would help. Use something specifically for electronics though.

I found CRC brand QD contact cleaner in the electrical Dept at Home Depot. It's good for TPC sensors, radio volume & fader pots, logicon buttons & slider, stereo jacks, window switches - you get the idea..

I don't think the contacts are my problem. It may be something inside the tps. Is there a way to open one up without disrupting the calibration?

Just shoot the cleaner down inside it and work it back and forth while holding it so that the excess can run out. That stuff should flood the dirt out.

So if my idle is going up and down from 1000 to 50 and back to 1000 I should just change my tps?

Try to adjust it first.

Not to sound like an idiot but how do you adjust it. I was told to do this last summer but couldn't figure it out? I checked on a new sensor and am not looking to get a new one.

Yeah the TPS is pricey huh?

Well, I pulled the TPS off the car. I let it sit in a bucket of cleaning solution for electrical parts for 2 hours. I then pushed the plungers in for 10-15 minutes repeatedly trying to get the gunk out. I tested the resistance again... and sure enough steady climb, steady decrease. I put it back in the car, reset the ecu and the rev to 3k on cold start came back. The car no longer hesitates at any rpm. I can actually roll in 3rd gear at 1500 rpm, hit the gas and not get any bucking.

MY S5 TII is BAAAAACCKKK!!!!
