Took Radiator Fill Cap Off - O-Ring MAGICALLY Grew!!!

Ok, did a GOOD coolant flush today and I'm putting everything back on. I had to take my fan shroud off today as well.. so I took the radiator fill cap elbow off. Well... now the fucking rubber gasket/o-ring will not fit back into the recess... i swear to god it just grew! I have a little bit of excess that I can't stuff into the recess for nothing. So basicly my car is USELESS until this little piece of rubber gets back on or I'll be squirting fluid everywhere...

Thanks, Jon.

Just cut the oring. Then trim it just enough so it will fit. Then put a dab of RTV in the spot where you cut it. Then let it cure for at least 24 hours. Worked just fine on mine.

RTV?

In other words blue silicone.

Well fuck.

Its 8:30 PM now and everything is closed. I have to be able to drive in the morning. Could I just trim it "perfectly" and let it be for a day or two until I can get either a new ring or some of this RTV stuff?

couldn't you put something cold on it? Maybe make it shrink?

Ive tried letting it get wet, drying it out with a hair dryer.. freezing it, and putting a hair dryer on it to warm it up. No luck.

Seriously. Just do this. This is the way to do it. :) There is no other way to really 're-use' the gasket. It will always be deformed unless you cut it.
