Took apart my turbo, this is what it looks like.

I took apart my turbo today, since it was leaking oil and I had a smoking issue. After disassembly, I found some oil in the turbine housing and a great deal of gunk. The shaft didn't want to spin when I first popped it out, I had to spin it manually. I've got a few more picture of it, but this shows a majority of the damage.

Can I salvage this turbo? Everything else looks fine, there is just a great deal of gunk on this part of the turbo. It's the sealing area on the turbine side of the turbo. I have the part # bookmarked for the rebuild kit of the turbo, so I know there is a kit, but anybody know if I should even bother rebuilding it?

definetly try a rebuild. the kit costs what maybe $60-$70?? worth it in my opinion. how does the shaft look? not scored too bad i hope. did it have a lot of bad shaft play when you pulled it off? you also might want to check your oil return for blockage. the piston ring type seal on the turbine side is designed to seal against exaust gasses, not oil retention. if you are getting that much oil in the turbine i would suspect that either you are getting too much oil to the turbo or your drain is clogged.

be sure if you rebuild it yourself to get it balanced, you wouldn't want a shaft spinning at 100,000 rpm+ to be unbalnaced and destroy your rebuild with bits of schrapnel.

i beleive the rebuild kit is $110 at turbocity.com

Yeah the kit is $110. There wasn't any play in the shaft when I put the engine in the car, and there really isn't now. The shaft looks fine, but the end of the shaft near the turbine wheel, the metal is dark brown, and looks like it's been overheated. Where could I get the thing balanced at? Everything in the turbo looks fine except for that area, so would balancing be absolutely necessary? Also, does anywhere still sell the shaft and wheels? Also, a diagram of what it's supposed to look like would be great since the FSM doesn't have a tear down diagram of it.
