Tired motor, Bad Compression test results at 150k

It's a 88 turbo II

Was able to do a cold and hot compression test today.

Front 90 psi cold 75 psi hot

Rear 105 psi cold 80 psi hot

Guess the motor is done... to bad because when it starts (pretty much only when cold) it does run great.

Looks like i'll be swapping motors.

How much is the bad turbo motor swap worth (complete with turbos, transmission, ECU all sensors etc)?

I'll probably put in a different motor

texFCturboII 05-22-09 01:54 PM

how much is a low compression motor worth? not much.

You'd make more money ripping it apart and selling the rotors, housings, irons, e-shaft etc, by themselves.

dtale15 05-22-09 02:51 PM

ah that sucks.. i need to do a compression test on mine.
it drove about 40 miles when i picked it up though without trouble.. cant imagine it having bad compression.

freemanrx7 05-22-09 03:00 PM

Rebuild the one you have. The best time to rebuild them is when they have low comp vs blowing a seal.

arghx 05-22-09 03:29 PM

disassemble the motor and spec everything out. even if you don't intend to rebuilt it yourself, you can still part it out as everyone said, and it will be a good learning experience.

Sketch_hs 05-22-09 04:34 PM

Yeah I've taken apart a rotary before... anyways I didn't buy it with the plan to use the rotary engine.... just wanted to see if it was a good motor before i sell / part it.

Anyways I know most of you guys will probably hate me for this but here is a teaser of whats next for this old rx7:

Yes the car in the background is my mkiv supra. Part of my motivation for this swap!

Under the hood of the supra:

Show off!!!
cool cat is cool.

Vierte 05-22-09 11:11 PM

thats not the safest place to store your kittens. what happens when one morning you forget to let him out and u drive off and your big single eats him? huh, then what?

good swap tho should be fun

MazdaMike02 05-22-09 11:49 PM

That made me lol I love cats.
Not too bad, but I think the cost of a non Mazda swap versus a rebuild is meh.

Sketch_hs 05-23-09 12:41 AM

Exactly! A good rebuilt would cost just as much.

Besides I want a reliable 300hp rx7 that can get 25+ mpg

The entire swap is going to cost less than 3k because i'll be doing all the work myself.

The car was only 850!

I've done a few custom swaps but this will be the biggest undertaking so far. VERY EXCITED!

rx-711 05-23-09 01:33 PM

do a write up off the swap, id like to see this

yomomspimp06 05-23-09 03:53 PM

You should drop in a re and be happy
on another note a buddy of mine is doing a 1J in his 240...

Sketch_hs 05-24-09 12:24 AM

RE?

I'll be doing a write up on this swap for sure. Where should I post it... Other engines?

texFCturboII 05-24-09 11:13 AM

Dude, if that is an original turbo II...... I forbid you to do the swap. Get a fucking gxl and swap it, but don't molest the precious few turbo II's that are still out there.

dot_txt 05-24-09 01:04 PM

Rolling Chassis.. Much better candidate for the swap..

Please in the name of all that is holy do not molest the TII

Aaron Cake 05-24-09 01:19 PM

What a pussy engine. ;)

Sketch_hs 05-24-09 02:22 PM

har har har

maac0953 05-24-09 02:53 PM

why would you want ANOTHER piston engine car. you have a 3.0L 2j so there no point in swapping a 2.5L in. thats just retarded. it would be cool to have both worlds of the car scene, a bad ass 2jz and a crazy ass 13bt.

i think it would be boring driving the same shit all the time.

i have a mk3 87.5 supra/turbo and its kinda stock ish 7mgte and then i have my 87 TII and i love having both worlds.:dunno:

Sketch_hs 05-24-09 07:40 PM

Because I can :)

mr_4g 05-25-09 10:28 AM

hmmmm
I would use a 4G63T

Sketch_hs 05-25-09 12:42 PM

Would cost just as much and make less power. Silly greg!

If the rotary could make reliable power with good gas millage cheaply I would totally keep it. It's a fun motor and I love the concept. But communism works in concept too... Lol

I'll be starting a build thread soon...
