Tire/rim width
I've seen this issue go by a few times, but I forgot :P
What's the widest you can go rim and tire width, in both the front and the back? ------------------ 86' GXL (All parts from this car will be going to the SE) Racing Beat Headers Sebring Exhausts, with Y-Pipe Blitz Intake No A/C & P/S 16" SportComp Electric Fan And all the suspension goodies... ------------------------- 86' SE in the works So far I've bought Erebuni rear skirt, and side skirts. The GTU wing, and next to come is the Type II front airdam from Border. Going to paint it white, and slap on white ADR DTM wheels |
8" front, 9" rear on stock fenders.

225 up front, and actually 255 in back.
I'm not too sure what you're eyeing... Not all 225 wide tires will fit up front.  The offset of the rim is critical in making sure it fits.  There are some very "fat" 225 tires due to wider sidewall profiles (i.e. curb protection design).  +25mm offset on an 8" wide rim should fit up front - you might need to roll the fenders a bit for slight clearance problem, but this easily clear the inside shock. Th rears can easily swallow a 255 wide tire.  You can run a 9" wide rim with a +30mm offset no problem.  Some people have even run wider 265's in back, but it gets kinda tight with anything over 255. https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/smile.gif -Ted ------------------ Ted Koseki Technical Advisor http://www.k2rd.com/ |

Im running 18X9 rims in the back on my turboII, and still need to buy fronts. Question, what offset are you guys using for your rims? Im going to be using a 17x7 with a 215/45 tire. I dont want to run spacers if i dont have to.

I have used:
18x8.5 with 225/35/18 front 18x9.5 with 255/35/18 rear I didn't have any problems running these size tires and rims, and I can actually put 265/35/18 in the rears with no problems. I also recall someone using a 10" rim on the rear of a TII without any problems as well. Offset is the key! ------------------ Richard NSXTASY 1BADRX7 |
I got in contact with the people I'll be buying my wheels from. Would a +38mm wheel offset fit fine in the rear with 245/45/17 tires, and 225/45/17 in front?

I hate to throw this wrench out, but what kind of racing are you going to be doing?
Big diameter wheels means potentially same or taller gear ratios and more unsprung weight. |
For autocross, you'd be better off with 15 or 16 inch wheels. I run 15x7 wheels with 225/50-15 Kuhmo V700 R compound tires. With my springs and shocks, this setup is good for a little over 1.0 g's of lateral grip.
If you run 245's in the back and 225's in the front, you're gonna push/plow like crazy unless you've got some mad power and/or significant camber adjustments to help coax the rear around. The 225/50-15 will also give you shorter gears and a slightly lower ride height. If you haven't autocrossed much yet, don't even bother with R-compound tires until you've run several events. Not only are they sticky and expensive, but they're very easy to ruin/flat spot in a single day if you're not used to a lot of threshhold braking and cornering. I don't want to use these wheels for the racing though, just for looks and daily driving. I have 15x7 wheels on my current rx7 with 225 on both front and rear, i'm planning on using these for just autocrossing. I've never done auto-x before, so this'll be my first time. Does this rule (225/255) change if you run coil-overs because you have more clearance inside the fenders? I want to run 245's up front!

go_speed_go - What offset are your 15X7's? I thought I'd use 7 or 7.5" wheels with the Kumhos too.

I knew of quite a few people back in Japan that ran with with 17x8 in the front and 17x9 in the rear. The common tire sizes they would use were 235/45R17 and 265/40R17 for the front and rear respectively. Ok, I know that for the stock wheels on the Turbo II, their offset is +40mm, so would 245/45 tires fit that 16x7 wheel with a +40mm offset?? If not, what can be done to make them fit?

What's the widest meats that will fit on the stock TII wheels? Is it 255 or 245?
