Tips for starting car after sitting 3 months?
My car has been sitting around various places while i'm here in VA and its back in NJ for over 3 months and I was wondering if I should take any precautions when starting it for the first time in so long?

Start it up and give it the 9K gas pedal check. KIDDING.....I've never had a car sitting that long before. But from what I understand, you may want to manually inject a bit of oil into the housings via the plug holes...and hand crank it a couple times.

mine sat for 2 years, we just did the EGI trick, smoked alot once it started but it runs fine now

Pull the plugs and hand crank it or let it turn over to get some lubrication in there before you fire it up. Other than that it should be fine. I fired mine up recently after 9 months, not a problem.

Bingo.
I say, just put a little motor oil in the plug holes, let it sit for a bit, then rotate the engine, repeat this three times, then start her up! Monitor the coolant temperature/level level closely. Observe the oil level before and after your first drive. |
I left my car in California for 3 months. Came back and started her up. Nothing special. The battery was dead even with it unplugged. Jump started her and it started fine. I then drove it 1700 miles to Houston. I changed the oil when I got back to Houston. The oil was also changed prior to parking her.
It had lots of smoke too, but that was because there was too much gas. |
3 Months, I haven't cranked the TII in 5 months :D
3 Months shouldn't be that big of a deal. You might want to charge up the battery first. I'm planning to flush my coolant & change the oil before cranking. |
might start by praying... did you oil her up before stopping it?
should be okay. forum members say: change fluids, and drop some oil in there before starting up. |
