Timing problems

This is a fresh reman, no emissions, no accessories, and it idles at 750 +-20 according to the SAFC. I went to time it.. hooked the timing light up to the L1 wire, and I couldn't even see the yellow mark. So I moved the CAS totally to one side, and the yellow mark got closer to the pin but did not get right on it. I cannot turn the CAS anymore to get it to line up... What's causing this..

Also, when I move the yellow mark as close as I can the motor seems to idle worse.. but when I move it totally the other way it idles even worse... then when I put the CAS in the center, I can't even see the mark yet it idles good. Whats up?

Edit: Also... this is an SAFC question... Right now the car is running really rich, I have an air/fuel gauge and would like to lean it out a little bit. I don't have a dyno ANYWHERE near me. Is there anyway I can do some crude tuning with what I have to watch it with?

Right now it has the stock injectors and pump, just for the break in period, then I am installing a Walbro and larger injectors. I would just like to save a little bit of gas and was wondering if I can get away with some light SAFC tuning without a dyno.

Thanks for any help.
