TII won't start
I just got done putting my car back together. I had about half the harness unplugged, everything from the dash back because I was removing my sound deadning and painting my interior. When I turn the key to where the ignition should come on nothing happens and when I turn the key all they way to where it should start the e-brake light comes on like it does when the ignition is on but as soon as I turn the key back it turns off. The low fuel light is also always on even when the key is out.
I'm guessing I missed a ground or something but I can't find anything. I removed the thing under the passenger seat that has the plug that goes to it but I don't see how that could effect it. Any ideas? |
Ok so the e-brake sensor wasn't even plugged in. Now that I plugged it in the light is alwasys on. I'm getting constant power even when the key is out. Blinkers and everything but the car won't start.
Sounds like you need to take a look at the wiring diagram and spend some time under the steering column with a flashlight and test light (especially around the ignition switch area). I think you may have plugged some stuff together that shouldn't be.
That's exactly what it was. Thanks. Now the ignition turns on and everything but when I try to start it the starter just clicks once like it's not getting enough power. I tried jumping it and put the battery out of my truck in and still does the same thing. I don't know why the starter would be bad put I banged the solenoid a couple times any way and it didn't help.

Run a jumper wire from the battery positive terminal to the B/W wire at either the Starter Cut relay if equipped or the Blue plug located near the trailing coil which houses the B/W wire that runs to the starter solenoid w/the car in neutral and see if this turns over the starter properly.
The car turns over with the jumper wire. Should the car start that way though. It's not turning my fuel pump on. Ignition is on, fuel pump is plugged in. I'm gonna test the pump it was good when I parked the car.
Fuel pump is good.
Does the car have the Starter Cut relay or just the Blue plug?
The only blue plug I saw by the coil only had one wire in it that was looped back to the plug. I unplugged the wire that plugs into the starter which I am guessing is the relay and wired that to the battery and it turns over fine. Just no fuel. The fuel pump doesn't even prim when I first turn the key on. I'm about to just wire it to a switch for now.
Wired the pump to a switch and it still won't start which makes me think there is no spark. Once my friend gets here I'm going to check it. Can't really do it by myself.
Did you wire the pump correctly?
Be sure your coils are grounded well. Is this a J-Spec engine?... If so, you may have the fuel lines reversed. |

At the Starter Cut relay, measure the voltage on both the Black/Green wires and one of them has voltage w/key to on while the other doesn't. Focus on the wire which does not and jumper a wire from there to the B/W wire in the relay and try to start the car. You can jumper the fuel check connector and w/key to on the pump should turn on. If it does not then verify that the 15 amp Engine fuse is good. |
I'm confused. Is the starter cut relay on the solenoid? Is that where I was jumping it from. And where is the relay? Thanks for all the help.

By wire the pump right do you mean to the switch? Yes it was turning on. I never messed with the coils or the fuel lines.

..

The b/w wire runs to a white clip that has 2 red wires running to it also from the plug it seems to run into the main harness and into the interior.

Connection is clean. Wouldn't jumping that wire be the same as jumping it right at the solenoid? Because the wire plugs into where I'm jumping it at.
It has spark too. So when I have the fuel pump on a switch and jumper it I don't get why it won't start??? I also left out that I pulled the the CAS out and aligned it cause I'm going to time iw once I get it started. So I guess that could effect it. It's not even trying though. It sounds like it's not getting fuel and/ or spark but it is. I'm thinking it might be flooded now but it's never flooded before. And that still doesn't explain why it won't start with the key.

You were asked initially to provide voltage to the starter at a point closer than the ignition switch to see if the starter actually works. Correct? If the starter did not turn over by providing voltage to the starter directly then wouldn't that tell you where the problem or at least one of the problems lies? Correct? Since you proved that the starter works it would be incumbent upomn you to then procede to find the weak link causing the problem. Correct? If the B/W wire located just near the Main relay was jumpered to voltage and the starter turned over doesn't that rule out the starter itself and the connection at the starter solenoid itself. Correct? So the next logical step in the process would be to work your way back towards the ignition switch to figure out the root cause of you problem. Correct? Now when the starter is jumpered to give it voltage the "only" item receiving voltage is the starter and not the radio or the windshield wipers or the fuel pump or even the Bidet! So the car is not going to start when figuring out why the starter just clicks w/the ignition turned to start via the method used so far to isolate the problem. Understand? |
Correctttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ttttttttttttttttttttttttttt. I just figured if the ignition is turned to on, which is where it goes after the car starts, the pump and everything would come on once the car starts. So how do I jumper that wire. It's to tight in the pack of the plug to get anything in there so I need to cut a slice in the side so I can touch a jumper wire to it? Thanks again for all the help.
Also, someone told me the starter relay might be bad and that it is located under the dash by the fuses. Are the relays located there on some years? it's a '87.
You mentioned a White plug w/2 Red wires plus the B/W wire that leads down to the solenoid. Where did you find this plug in relation to the other items in the engine bay?
