TII Trans literally Blew up!
 

So I was driving along at about 55 mph in fifth gear and all the sudden the Trans went BOOM, it even blew my brand new shift knob off and broke it. Well while I was waiting for the tow truck I took my shift boot off and saw that the main piece that my shifter bolts into has been completely cracked and will move left and right. I got it home and the back end of the trans is fine (the area where my drive line goes in is fine so I know vibration didn't cause this). Then you look up from and the bottom of the bell housing is cracked near my starter all the way to about where my first oil plug is at. What the hell happened? Its not like this trans has seen a lot of milage maybe 60K at the most. These things are supposed to be able to take like 500 hp no problem but my little 200 hp Rotary Killed it?? and with out any load? all I can say is WTF. I bought the trans from a good friend and thats how I know all about the mileage and the condition it is in. I personally have only put 598.3 miles on it (just rebuilt the engine and bought the trans at the same time, I reset the odometer cause I'm still breaking the engine in) Ok so any thoughts guys? And ya, how much does one of these damn things cost, this was supposed to be my daily driver but I guess not anymore huh. Looks like I'm not getting the intercooler I wanted, I'll be buying another Trans, again...

wow and when u bought it there were no signs of stress or fatigue in the caseing?? my only gess would be that some how the tranny was internaly damaged and a part broke free and went for a ride inside there

Its not seized cause I can get it into 3rd with a lot of effort (the shift linkage case is broken too) Something probably broke apart inside it I bet. The max speed I could tow the car was about 25mph before everything began to shake really bad. But above all the engine held up, Its all perfect still and my Mazdaspeed stage 3 racing clutch setup is still fine, all I'm saying is it could have been worse I guess. I'll definitely put up some pics when I take it out pretty soon here

Though transmission work can be tedious. I'd say tear it open and do some investigative work.

Nope no warranty. I never even thought about a warranty much cause I've put over 400hp into TII trans' before with no problems and have never "Blown" one up. I didn't see any obvious signs of stress and fatigue when I put it in, but then again it was a low mileage trans and I wasn't looking for defects on it.

I have no idea how the previous owner treated it at all. My friend just got and was told that everything was fine on it, everything was fine on it when I was driving it. The shifter could of had a little less throw (what RX7 doesn't? lol) but other than that it shifted fine and everything. I know I wasn't hard on it cause I can't even begin to really have fun with the engine cause it's still breaking in like I said. Well above all I'm getting another "Good" S5 TII trans this weekend and another S5 TII trans that is stuck in Fourth gear (any ideas why?) but it has good housings and everything so I can use it to rebuild...

Was there fluid in it? Lack of lube and cause shit to blow. Also I'm in the middle of overhauling mine and special tools are a must! Trying with out them you'll only break something or hurt yourself.

Yup completely full , I just changed all my fluids in the car a few days ago...

Care to drop the pan on the bottom of the gearbox? I'm curious to see whats in there.

well fifth gear and reverse are in the rear of the tranny so you probly wont see anything from droping the pan. when my TII trans went out i was shifting into 5th and heard a loud bang and had every gear but 5th. when i tore it apart the shaft for 5th gear was so bent i couldnt get the tranny apart.
