Thoughts about these brakes & pads?
Has anyone tried a set of these brake combo's? R1 Concepts
Right now I'm looking for a good deal on brakes that won't be used for race, but some occational spirited driving. The pads I'm somewhat framiliar with from my old car, but the brakes were oversized (12"ers up front, so I cant really compare). They were Axis metal master (semi metalic) pads and were a decent match up for themy old brakes. Are they any good for standard brake systems? Would I be better off with some normal rotors and some Nissin ceramic (my fav) pads, or some KVR rotors??? |
DO NOT get drilled rotors, especially ones off ebay. Even the super-expensive Brembo's in Ferraris will crack. First of all, what kind of rotors do you have now? If they are the good drilled ones like on the gxl and turbo, then I say just use those and get some good pads like Hawk HPS.

Yeah I've heard bad things about drilled rotors. Like cracked rotors while at an autox.
I just came across this from the 3gen threads: http://turboimport.com/catalog/rx7_fc3s.htm Looks like decent rotors. The rotors are dimpled not drilled. |
Yeah, if you want the frilled look, get the Power Slot Pro Stop rotors - http://powerslot.com/pages/pro_stop.html

i got mine from Irotors...... www.irotors.com ...... i didnt get the zinc plating though.... im curious if that weakens the rotors?!?! mine rust like crazy when sitting for a while, but the rust is gone the second i brake once...... so it doesnt bother me.........
but yeah, ive heard alot of peoples bad experiences w/ x-rotors, but ive had nothing but good w/ mine! my friend w/ an rx8 got rotors from irotors also, and he has had no cracking yet either! going on 1 year w/ those rotors |
Hmmm, they must have some good quality rotors then. Good to know.

most people i know swear by blank rotors. the amount of surface area you save outweighs the "cooling advantage" offered by drilled rotors. we usually run 'frozen rotors' blanks, and they stand up to the challenge of prolonged drifting.
|
Yeah, I have heard very good things about frozen rotors. They actually have a deal with Power Slot to make cryo-treated slotted rotors. I think thats what I'm going to get next time I get new rotors.

i have powerslots on my n/a, they are very nice... actually noticed 0 difference from stock lol

ya- I would like to avoid drilled rotors due to the cracking, but wanted to replace the slightly warped stockers that I have now, and pads are always a good thing to replace while working on a brake project. The slotted rotors are also not crack proof- my friend had the same AEM brakes that I had and one ended up cracking (althou his car was much heavier and he drove it like it was stolen.. and washed his car afterwards).
-As it turns out my exhaust is in need of replacement, so I will get some Raybestos brand stock style rotors and upgrade the pads to something... -Anyone have any pad reccomendations? I'm leaning towards some Nissin ceramics, or perhaps some project mu pads... pads that work to 800 degrees is ideal with good cold bite. |
