Thought my starter was bad... Oh how wrong I was...

I pulled the starter today and replaced it with a remanufactured one. I hooked it up and tested it, and it just spun. I got pissed and pulled it back off and started to rotate the flywheel looking for broken teeth. Well I put a screwdriver in to spin the flywheel and THE RING GEAR IS SEPARATED FROM THE FLYWHEEL! I am having a super long run of bad luck and this is just more shit on the pile. I am leaving for Somerset, PA on the 5th. I don't have much money on me. What are my options? This is my only car. I have a parts car with another (presumably) good flywheel, but I thought they were balanced for the engine. How in God's name could it just fall apart like that?? What are my options? Can the ring gear be pressed back in? Welded?

As long as your parts car is the same series and engine and trans, you can use it.

For example, Both must be a S4 NA MT. Both must be S5 TURBO MT.

The only hard part is getting the flywheel nut loose.

stock flywheels can be had for cheap, find one machines it and change your clutch while your in there, preventative maintnence.

In the time between my first post and now, I've dropped the transmission, and pulled the flywheel. My flywheel just came off, no puller needed... Don't know why that was. Can the ring gear be pressed back on? There is no damage or anything.

Dude..get another Flywheel!..,If the thing fell apart,Why the Hell would you want to Risk Having your Legs CUT off if the thing lets go while you are at High Revs??..For God's sake, get a New(used) one, that is Intact!

Ya just use your other one have it machined so its smooth and perfect and drop a new clutch in. If you cant do all that due to money constraints just swap the other flywheel in w/ the clutch you have. No sense machining it now if your using the old clutch (I think)

Definitely put in a new flywheel. I wish I had the video of the Skyline handy that had a ring gear fly apart - the thing busted out of the bellhousing and put holes in the frame rail and hood. Driver was very lucky is went out that way instead of through the floorboard, otherwise he would be driving sans legs now.

So there was no flywheel nut?
