Thinking about a rebuild. never done it before.

Well im thinking about rebuilding my 1987 13B. Ive never rebuilt an engine before and id really like to learn and do it myself. Ive been researching alot lately and found videos that can help me. whats the odds of me getting it right? I will have some help from friends and family that know about cars but not the rotary. and what rebuild kit is the best at the best price? and any tips or anything I need to look out for or might forget. thanks!

There are two rebuild threads in the Archives (one by me, one by iceblue) that should give you a clear picture of the process.

If you are mechanically inclined and can follow instructions, then you can probably do the job. Read the threads in detail because they cover some of the common mistakes.

As for rebuild kits, I don't know. I always just buy that stuff from the dealer. All the vendors offer their own version so you'll have to do some price shopping.

Go for it you can do it, if your mechanically inclined and can follow directions.
I got a rebuild kit from atkins, they have a pretty good selection or you can peice together all the parts you'll need after you spec everything out.
Things to watch out for: The eccentric shaft bolt is large and torqued to like 350 ft/lbs so your going to need an impact as well as the socket to get it off. Be sure to check your eccentric shaft endplay after the motors back together, but before you put the front cover on. There are some thrust bearings and washers under front cover, and if your not careful they can fall out of place and create some serious problems if they're not corrected before startup. Also, make sure the oil control ring springs are in correctly and line up with the tabs on the oil control rings. Anybody have anything else to add.. this is probably all covered in the FAQ.

Put the clutch in correctly, I screwed that up. My motor fired up first try, but the car wouldn't go into gear because the clutch plate was in backwards... that sucked.

Good luck!
