thermostat for E-fan questions
anyone know a good brand thermostat, or are they all about the same reliability wise
also, would the rubber hose that take the hot coolant back to the radiator be a good place to put it...since im not comfortabel tapping a hole in one of the housings? also, would a new thermostat hook up to my black magic the same way was the one that comes with it (connect to the metal wire) thnx |
When my NA's Black Magic thermostat failed, I picked up a $20 fixed temperature stat at a local parts store.
It came with a relay for the fan & a diode for the AC clutch wire. It worked perfect until the fan motor siezed up a few months later. That same stat next ran a 90's Ford Tarus fan. It was still working when I sold the NA to buy the turbo. That cheap fixed setting stat was rock solid reliable. |
And - put the stat probe through the radiator fins about 2" from the top inlet nipple.
|
so, you woudl say that probe that comes with the fan works accurately until it ultimately breaks?

sorry all..i was informed that what im actually talkgin abotu replacing is the thermo sensor (the probe that is supposed to go through the rad. fins...) so I guess my questions shoudl have been
What woudl eb a good replacement for this, since I hear it is unreliable, and woudl there be a better placcet to put it then one that goes through the radiator |

I never had a problem with it. I wired the supply current from the battery, so I got a cool down run after shutting off the engine. (Like the NA equivalant of a turbo timer) |
I've just installed a Spal FAN-PWM, and it's probably the best thing since the now defunct PSM-1 (I think that's what it was called).
It can use almost any thermo sensor, or you can use the Spal one (bought separately). You can set it to whatever temps you want to! It's slightly under $100, but I think it's one of the best on the market right now. I'm planning to do a big write-up on it once I get time to... -Ted |
I picked up an adjustable thermostat/relay at Autozone or Advance Autoparts for ~$34. It seems to be reliable, I've had it on there for 3yrs/30k. It has a 2" probe that can just be stuck between the rad fins.
