Is there a replaceable part?

I am wondering if the rubber seal on the shift lever itself is replacable? Not the rubber boots, the little seal on the pivot portion of the shaft itself. Mine's gone and leaking fluid out from the shifter pivot ball.

Is the part you are looking for on this page?

Yes, you can just replace that part.
The one with the metal flange with the three bolt holes, right?

Here's a hint, don't fill the extension housing with trans fluid.
Although the Mazda FSM clearly states you need to do so, I have never seen an original transmission from the factory have fluid in the extension housing.
I have never filled my transmission back there with no ill effects.

In that case Ted, How do you get the shifter apart to replace the rubber seal? I don't understand how you are able to remove the shifter from the flange to replace the rubber seal. Thanks

Here is what I'm talking about.

trochoid Jun 29, 2005 07:52 AM

You can't take the upper and lower parts of the shifter apart, without destorying the vulcanized rubber holdng them together. While I haven't replaced that seal, I would venture a guess that fresh, new rubber and a good lubricant, would allow the boot to stretch over the shifter from the top.

If it is the part I think it is in your pic. then it is listed as part C on the link above.

The part IS the rubber part and the metal flange.
You replace both at the same time.
The old one needs to be cut away.

Oh, thanks Ted. I was thinking I might have to replace the whole shifter assembly.

Pretty sure you are talking about this. Like someone said, listed as "C". Its all one unit (metal and rubber). And a little lube will help slide it over the top of the shifter. (After you take off the knob)

just goto the junk yard and pull one ittakes about 1 min.

I have had 3 FCs and all 3 were shot. Mine is still destroyed. The rubber is all ripped and doesn't even touch the shifter while it neutral. :)

Doesn't bother me any. My short throw has fresh bushings, that is all that matters.

Maybe that was something the dealer was supposed to do before delivery?

Found a site that has everything I need to replace as a whole kit. Has bushings and all the boots needed for replacement. Thanks again. BTW I can't really scavenge FC parts around here. The few that are around are not in the local salvage yards. Besided that, I'm completely going through this car. Just bought this one and I am not in a hurry to get it done. I've got some serious $ I'm going to be spending to get this car into the condition I want. I am going through and replacing anything that leaks, is worn or objectionable. Some upgrades will be done as well.

BTW, the newer versions of this:

will not have the lip on the metal part.
